The Ministry of Food and Drug Safety (MFDS) in Korea sets maximum residue levels (MRLs) for pesticides in foods to ensure pesticide residues do not pose health risks to consumers even after lifetime exposure. While MRLs are established through import tolerances, this does not mean the pesticide can be used in Korea - only pesticides registered under the Pesticide Control Act can be used domestically. For processed foods, MRLs specifically established for those products are applied, while standards factoring raw material and water content are used if no MRLs exist. The Positive List System regulates pesticide residues by only allowing MRLs for pesticides proven safe and applying a default limit of 0.01
