Whatever It Takes Ch 1 Final
Educators must align their practices to ensure all students learn essential skills and concepts. They should use formative assessments to monitor student progress and adjust instruction accordingly, and summative assessments to evaluate mastery of material at the end of a learning period. If schools focus on mastery of essential objectives, test scores under accountability programs like No Child Left Behind will improve as a result.

Preliminary results from the charity organization case study indicate challenges with work assignment processes, long-term funding uncertainty, and a need for flexibility and agreement across organizational departments to fully include employees with mental illnesses.

ABSTRACT
This paper will describe the intellectual underpinning of learning and teaching at the School of Management, St Andrews which is ‘Responsible Enterprise’. We propose exploring with faculty (early in 2014) what scholarship/teaching/learning demands emerge for Responsible Enterprise in World 3: Only Connect. Presentation at Canada's Collaboration for Online Higher Education and Research Conference (COHERE), Vancouver, BC. In this presentation, I describe the messy realities of learning and participation in open online courses. I discuss the MOOC phenomenon as a symptom of chronic failures in the higher education system and discuss what we can learn about learning experiences by studying learning "on the ground."

E-portfolios provide benefits for learning but also present challenges. Research shows e-portfolios engage students by allowing them to actively collect, select and reflect on their work over time. However, institutions must address issues around purpose, assessment, technology and faculty/student buy-in. Future research is needed on what constitutes valid evidence of learning in e-portfolios and how portfolios can support deep learning and critical reflection.

Education has the potential to make a substantial contribution towards improving the life-chances of the 50,000 children and young people in out-of-home care (OOHC) across Australia and New Zealand. Yet, most in OOHC face significant educational challenges, many do not receive a quality education, and exceptionally few go on to university. Making links with the growing body of Australasian and international research literature on the education of children in OOHC, this presentation reports on ‘Slipping down Ladders and Climbing up Snakes’ - a doctoral qualitative study that investigated the experiences of seven New Zealand university students who were formerly in foster care. The presentation particularly focuses upon the study's findings in relation to foster care and leaving care. While confirming that ‘Kiwi kids in care’ can and do go to university, the main barriers included limited educational support for those in foster care, mixed placement quality, multiple placements and a lack of permanency, challenging behaviour, being discharged from care at 17 and irrespective of whether schooling had been completed, generally poor and somewhat limited relationships with social workers, and limited financial support on leaving care from the national statutory child welfare agency Child, Youth and Family. Nonetheless, and despite the above, participants’ experiences also suggest the critical importance of at least one of their longer-term foster carers creating an educationally-rich environment, and formal support services for care leavers where they were available. Once at university, the majority did sometimes struggle, although there was usually some support from former foster carers, long-term partners, and in some instances parents. As well as examining the possible implications of the study, whether and how such studies can shape policy and practice is also discussed.Matheson I. (2015). An ELI Short Course delivered on May 16th, 2016.
This session consists of practice-based research planning activities to help participants prepare for conducting research at the course or program level. Specifically, we will utilize the distance education research toolkit developed by the National Research Center for Distance Education and Technological Advancements (DETA) to guide the development of research plans for blended and online learning. Attendees will walk away with a research agenda and the necessary tools to help them conduct research on their campus as part of the National DETA Research Center initiative. The DETA Center seeks to identify and evaluate effective course and institutional practices in online learning (including competency-based education) for underrepresented learners.

Identify data gathering techniques
Consider other actionable milestones necessary to conduct rigorous research

Relationalism in educational leadership research
This document provides an overview of relational approaches in educational leadership research. It discusses four main forms of relational approaches: adjectival, co-determinist, conflationary, and relational. For each approach, the underlying ontological, epistemological, normative, and theoretical assumptions are explained. The implications for research using each approach are also outlined. The document argues that a relational approach offers both a theory and methodology for illuminating organizing activity through relations in specific spatio-temporal conditions.

This presentation was a guest lecture for Richard Niesche's "Critical perspectives in Educational Leadership" course. It draws on my forthcoming book and seeks to recast leadership through relations.
Working with Bourdieu
Dr Scott Eacott gave a presentation on working with the sociologist Pierre Bourdieu's concepts in educational leadership research. He introduced how Bourdieu's ideas of field, capital, and habitus have been applied in the literature. However, Eacott argues for "thinking with Bourdieu" and appropriating his methodological approach rather than directly applying concepts. He discusses enduring struggles in using Bourdieu, such as addressing science and temporality, and advocates an ongoing program of thinking anew to generate ideas rather than just critique.
