Parent Teacher Reationship

Editor's Notes

  1. Developing a rapport with parents at the start of the year can be a difficult but necessary task. The relationship based on the readings and research all point to a positive results and feedback which in turn helps student comprehension. Conversely, the author points out that if one studies the relationship between how good parental relationships are between parent and child, any problems that arise or difficulty in subject matter can be linked to aforementioned interaction between the child and family. In the following, yours truly will discuss ways that one can develop introductory letters between parent and teachers in order to foster a healthy relationship between parent and student in order to help maximize student interaction and performance. Furthermore, how to help keep the interaction between child and parent strong, to the point where it helps to reinforce and review lessons taught and improve academic performance. Also, methods that can help students retain and parent interact with children not just in literacy but all subject areas. Finally, the author will finish off with how to create an evaluation the parent can use to gauge the interaction between them and the teacher. A vital component needed to help foster positive interaction and communication.
  2. As yours truly discussed before, the importance of parent and teacher interaction is of major importance. Developing a strong relationship between adults is of major importance. The concept of interpersonal communication comes to mind in this particular instance. “By inviting parents into the classroom, by opening up communication through the newsletter, teachers develop an awareness of students’ broader sociocultural backgrounds” (Jensen, D. A. 2006 pg 188). Case in point what this now fosters is a great relationship between parent and teacher so both adults can get an understanding of how each other. It is the opinion of yours truly; it is a necessary component no matter the profession. Furthermore, “A message of dual support and mutual respect between the home and school is created when parents and teachers work together”(Jensen, D. A. 2006 pg 188). It’s important to note parents know their children better than any teacher can especially when it comes to literary subject matter. So insight into a child’s behavior and cultural customs is very important. The student could still be going through the process of cultural assimilation. From the authors personal experience it can be quite difficult especially if it involves language barriers.
  3. Continuing from the last section language is a vital component to comprehension and literacy and writing. The most important aspect is to point out as a teacher needs to provide a content rich environment so the child can excel in a way that maximizes their potential. Not only is this obviously important in and outside the classroom but both parent and teacher needs to encourage the mindset and attitude in children that allows them to excel. “With the understanding that literacy practices are socially constructed, children’s literacy experiences in daily life will inevitably influence their literacy development”( Shi, Z. 2013 pg 30). It’s a necessary component for development. However, most parents whether consciously or subconsciously do try to implement or instill their culture and or ancestry “Maintaining a heritage language is a way of constructing a learner’s cultural identity and, hence, his or her relationship to the world”( Shi, Z. 2013 pg 33). The author believes that the aforementioned doesn’t hinder students from being able to learn literacy. In fact, it is a necessary component that will help students to develop literacy, writing, reading both inside and outside the classroom and later on in adulthood.
  4. It is also the opinion of yours truly that it would be best for the teacher to sit with the parent and give some basic instructional exercises and tools that they can use to help students overcome. Practice the aforementioned procedures and as the research suggested ask questions that pertains to the content being taught whether it has to do with letter sounds and phonemic awareness especially from pre-K to second grade. Now as children get older from the theories of human development they will want to exercise or utilize certain levels of independence on a more consistent level. To adapt to their development both teacher and parent roles switch from being more hands on approach to a more supervisory role. It is important to note that the author believes in hands on pedagogical practice, so both teacher and parent can have student act out a scene from the material being read or the favorite part of the story they read about as it pertains to the subject matter. It is ones belief that this practice will help to foster the development of a sharp memory and retention, another form of project-based learning from a literary standpoint.
  5. When one thinks about strategy and literacy yours truly thinks about asking questions. It works in a variety ways and depends entirely on the teacher’s pedagogical method. Students ask questions about the part of the literary subject matter they don’t understand, or ask questions that pertain to events that are in the story. Furthermore, strategies on how to decode words they don’t know how to pronounce verbally. In addition, the meaning of words they don’t yet understand and how to effectively relate it to the literary subject matter. From the experience of yours truly, the best way to help students acquire comprehension is through frequent usage. Having students make verbal and written sentences depending upon the grade and age group. Conversely, teachers can collaborate with parents by issuing a copy of strategies to help students utilize the aforementioned in order for students to become more efficient with the concept being taught. In short, students are then exposed to the literary subject matter inside and outside the classroom.
  6. It is important to not forget that students need to be able to have fun with learning. Literacy in today’s technological age can be boring. So how does one alleviate boredom from reading especially students from the second grade and beyond? Pair students in groups and have them choose a scene or one can choose and act out the scene to give students practice from the verbal standpoint of literacy. To the author this is an area may be ignored by the teacher. However, as previously mentioned the author’s propensity to have student learn by doing. The benefits this form of instructional practice offers some hands on learning and makes literacy fun for both student and instructor alike. One way to execute said exercise is by interacting with students as the lesson takes place have students choose a scene from reading place them in groups. One should do this by making sure that you mix all the groups so no group is inherently stronger than the other.
  7. A meeting of the minds between teacher and parent can be one of life’s many awkward moments. However, one thinks that it is a great idea to have a brief evaluation in order to help both parties overcome the awkward moment. As teachers some of us are also parents and often times nerves play a dominant role. The author thinks its best to use what is known as a “compliment sandwich.” However, in order to figure out its effectiveness one things an evaluation of how the meeting went from the parents is a great idea. Now the question is; how does one construct such an evaluation that’s fair to both parties involved? A simple grading system is what comes to mind. The author believes that also one should have a box set up like a ballot box outside the classroom so as the parents leave they can place their evaluation inside the box. This allows the teacher to be able to evaluate their interaction between them and parents. In addition, the teacher is able to figure out ways to improve their interaction. Furthermore, this allows the parent to have a say as to how they feel about the interaction and their confidence level of the teacher and their ability to teach their child.
  8. The grading system for a parent evaluation of an educator is very simple. Said system can be based on a number grading system from one to five. One would be lowest score and five being the highest. Create a grading system but keep it simple one does not want to get too in depth to the point that it takes away from instructional and planning time. In particular, the author recalls a colleague that mentioned immediately after receiving the yearly roster began sending out mail to all the parents. One believes that it’s the best way to begin dialogue between the parents about their child before the start of the school year.
  9. “For a successful conference, I know to begin with something positive, create a warm and inviting atmosphere, and be straightforward, but not insensitive” (Brandt, S. 2003 pg 160). The author firmly believes that the environment in which teacher meets has to be more than just conducive to learning but an environment where teacher and parent can both feel comfortable. In addition, one does agree with another concept discussed within the contents of this article. Yours truly does believe, the use of the Fourth generation evaluation method is an effective way to help bring about a positive outcome for children in all subject areas not just literacy. However, one believes that each teacher my need to make modifications to this method that fits their teaching style in order for it to be effective.
  10. The authors experience in education comes from a standpoint of dealing with inner city children. As some of my colleagues will tell you it’s a different environment when working with inner city children. They are exposed to so much both positive and negative images. One states this because some have to take on more responsibility at an early age. Parents from a big city have a lot on their plate sometimes school work and ability suffers. When we talk about parent teacher conferences or meetings that could be difficult. As teachers we have to adjust the approach just slightly in order to meet the parents on their time frame. However, with the advent and advances in technology some meetings have to be done by cell phone. Come to think of it, this form of communication and dialogue should be considered a blessing because some parents work odd hours and are not able to meet or come up to the school often. Therefore, there are a number of apps zoom in particular where a parent and teacher can have a videoconference. One can go over the literary program with the parent thus, keeping them up to date on how their child is doing in class.
  11. Another very important aspect of literacy is the concept of cultural assimilation. How does one communicate effectively to a parent that does not speak English effectively in order to help their child develop the necessary literary and phonetic skills? They are familiar with the concept of literacy. However, this concept is or was done in their native culture and language. Having an interpreter is a wise decision because the child may not be familiar with the literacy especially when dealing with pre-K students to 12th grade. “When people migrate to a new country, they bring with them resources, habits, and experiences from their home country” (Angelini, V., Casi, L., & Corazzini, L. 2015 pg 818).   The article goes on further to state; “they also enter this new society with (potentially) different cultural backgrounds, marked by distinct languages, religions, and (economic and social) values”(Angelini, V., Casi, L., & Corazzini, L. 2015 pg 818). Yours truly being an immigrant also had experienced cultural assimilation as a student. From a literary standpoint one was educated in the British and American school system. A primary example of differences is as follows; the word colour from the British system and now the same word color in the American system. Now on a written paper one remember spelling the word via the British system on a composition paper in the 6th grade and was told it was wrong. Just a small but necessary example it doesn’t matter if one speaks English. To adapt to a culture that’s foreign to your own is quite difficult.
  12. So to recap the author discussed the importance of the teacher reaching out and having a positive introductory reaction with the parent or guardian. In addition, the author talks about the importance of interpersonal communication and the role it plays in literacy and other subject areas. Furthermore, yours truly talks about the essential relationship between reading, writing, and comprehension. Also, the importance of showing parents how to conduct literary instruction to help retain understanding of the subject matter. Next the author mentions the importance of language usage, both verbal and written as a vital part of literary comprehension. Also the importance of keeping learning fun one mentioned learn by doing or the role that hands on learning plays when dealing with literacy. The construction of an evaluation process or survey to help teachers and parents when it comes to conferencing. Furthermore, how teaching experiences differ when teaching inner city children. Yours truly also talks about the concept of cultural assimilation and the role in plays in one’s personal experience growing up.
