Rachel Greenstadt: Security and Virtualized Environments: An OverviewEvangeline
Virtualization security is important for detecting malicious programs. Several properties of virtualization can be useful for security, such as isolation, instrumentation, and replay. However, virtualization can also introduce new vulnerabilities. Modern viruses use polymorphism to evade detection by changing their code structure but maintaining functionality. Emulating polymorphic malware in a virtual machine may not be effective for detection since the malware could detect that it is running in an emulated environment. More research is needed to develop techniques that can securely detect and analyze evolving malware using virtualization and emulation.
The document discusses brain imaging and electrophysiology techniques used to study language processing in the brain. Specifically:
1. Methods like EEG, MEG, and fMRI are used to measure brain activity during language tasks in different regions like Broca's area and the auditory cortex.
2. Studies show similar brain areas activate for early and late bilinguals during processing of their first and second languages, though activation decreases as proficiency increases in the second language.
3. More advanced imaging techniques allow observation of subtle differences between language processing in different brain areas for the first and second languages.

Health and Wellness in the Dairy Sector: How to use this to your Brand's Adva...HMT18
On Wednesday 15th February, 2012 Neal Cavalier-Smith teamed up with Phillip Siebrecht, Group Brand Manager Wellbeing from the Emmi Group to discuss Capitalising on “Soft Claims” in the Dairy Sector at the FoodNews® Dairy NPD Conference.
Even though the dust is beginning to settle in the wake of EFSA regulation, Health Claim implications on marketing strategy continues to be much talked about in the food industry.
As Neal observed in his presentation, one very large dairy success story has been the $700m growth of sales from US Greek yogurt company Chobani – a success acquired without using a health claim!
This gives us heart that there is more to marketing milk than what you can pour into it! Below is a link to download Neal’s presentation and to view it on slide share.

This summarizes an analysis of online conversations relating to the State of the Union address. The analysis examined millions of messages from sources like Twitter, blogs, social networks, and news sources to provide a true measurement and understanding of what topics were being talked about before, during, and after the address. The analysis found that jobs and unemployment were the top three topics being discussed before the State of the Union. The days following the speech saw a very large percentage of conversation focused on the economy and spending. Healthcare conversations continued to fall relating to other State of the Union chatter. The sentiment trend has not changed much over time but some significant spreads throughout the last few months were noted.

It briefly mentions how these early victories established German dominance in Europe but larger challenges lay ahead.
Virtualization security research aims to give all children secure laptops. Current applications have no isolation and complex kernels avoid vulnerability. Researchers propose a Virtual Machine Monitor to more rigorously access control programs in virtual machines or sandboxes that see only their own files/processes. This isolates resources and detects malicious programs. Researchers must change architectures to securely virtualize modern devices and instrument programs to run in virtual machines for security through obscurity.
Here are some recommendations for protecting students online:
- Teach media literacy and digital citizenship from an early age. Help students think critically about what they see online.
- Use browser and device controls to filter inappropriate content. Many also allow safe search and site blocking.
- Set clear rules for online behavior and privacy/security. Explain risks of oversharing personal information.
- Model positive digital interactions. Help students understand online actions have real-world consequences.
- Encourage students to tell a trusted adult if they feel unsafe or see something worrying online. Make reporting easy and ensure follow up.
- Consider online reputation management and privacy tools as students get older to help prevent issues like identity theft.

This study examined the impact and levels of heavy metals in transgenic Arabidopsis thaliana plants which were engineered to detect and respond to heavy metal stress. Plants were grown under controlled laboratory conditions with increasing concentrations of cadmium and lead to determine their ability to sense and respond to heavy metal exposure. The transgenic plants were able to detect and reverse heavy metal-induced damage to their DNA in correlation with metal concentrations, demonstrating their potential as bioreporters for the presence of heavy metals in soil and water systems. Preliminary data showed these transgenic plants could be useful bioreporters for detecting heavy metals in the environment.

This document discusses the relationship between economic growth and democracy. It argues that continual economic growth can undermine autonomy and democracy beyond a certain scale. While growth has historically led to loss of autonomy, this issue has been removed from political debate. The document then analyzes the self-reinforcing nature of the growth/accumulation/innovation process in industrial and financial capitalism, pointing to its emergent and path-dependent qualities. This long-term positive feedback loop has led to structural changes that increase social and ecological costs over time, challenging sustainability and fragmenting collective values, potentially opening scenarios that endanger democracy itself.

A toxic combination of 15 years of low growth, and four decades of high inequality, has left Britain poorer and falling behind its peers. Productivity growth is weak and public investment is low, while wages today are no higher than they were before the financial crisis. Britain needs a new economic strategy to lift itself out of stagnation.
Scotland is in many ways a microcosm of this challenge. It has become a hub for creative industries, is home to several world-class universities and a thriving community of businesses – strengths that need to be harness and leveraged. But it also has high levels of deprivation, with homelessness reaching a record high and nearly half a million people living in very deep poverty last year. Scotland won’t be truly thriving unless it finds ways to ensure that all its inhabitants benefit from growth and investment. This is the central challenge facing policy makers both in Holyrood and Westminster.
What should a new national economic strategy for Scotland include? What would the pursuit of stronger economic growth mean for local, national and UK-wide policy makers? How will economic change affect the jobs we do, the places we live and the businesses we work for? And what are the prospects for cities like Glasgow, and nations like Scotland, in rising to these challenges?
The Rise and Fall of Ponzi Schemes in America.pptxDiana Rose
Ponzi schemes, a notorious form of financial fraud, have plagued America’s investment landscape for decades. Named after Charles Ponzi, who orchestrated one of the most infamous schemes in the early 20th century, these fraudulent operations promise high returns with little or no risk, only to collapse and leave investors with significant losses. This article explores the nature of Ponzi schemes, notable cases in American history, their impact on victims, and measures to prevent falling prey to such scams.
Understanding Ponzi Schemes
A Ponzi scheme is an investment scam where returns are paid to earlier investors using the capital from newer investors, rather than from legitimate profit earned. The scheme relies on a constant influx of new investments to continue paying the promised returns. Eventually, when the flow of new money slows down or stops, the scheme collapses, leaving the majority of investors with substantial financial losses.
Historical Context: Charles Ponzi and His Legacy
Charles Ponzi is the namesake of this deceptive practice. In the 1920s, Ponzi promised investors in Boston a 50% return within 45 days or 100% return in 90 days through arbitrage of international reply coupons. Initially, he paid returns as promised, not from profits, but from the investments of new participants. When his scheme unraveled, it resulted in losses exceeding $20 million (equivalent to about $270 million today).
Notable American Ponzi Schemes
1. Bernie Madoff: Perhaps the most notorious Ponzi scheme in recent history, Bernie Madoff’s fraud involved $65 billion. Madoff, a well-respected figure in the financial industry, promised steady, high returns through a secretive investment strategy. Fabular Frames and the Four Ratio ProblemMajid Iqbal
Digital, interactive art showing the struggle of a society in providing for its present population while also saving planetary resources for future generations. Spread across several frames, the art is actually the rendering of real and speculative data. The stereographic projections change shape in response to prompts and provocations. Visitors interact with the model through speculative statements about how to increase savings across communities, regions, ecosystems and environments. Their fabulations combined with random noise, i.e. factors beyond control, have a dramatic effect on the societal transition. Things get better. Things get worse. The aim is to give visitors a new grasp and feel of the ongoing struggles in democracies around the world.
Stunning art in the small multiples format brings out the spatiotemporal nature of societal transitions, against backdrop issues such as energy, housing, waste, farmland and forest. In each frame we see hopeful and frightful interplays between spending and saving. Problems emerge when one of the two parts of the existential anaglyph rapidly shrinks like Arctic ice, as factors cross thresholds. Ecological wealth and intergenerational equity areFour at stake. Not enough spending could mean economic stress, social unrest and political conflict. Not enough saving and there will be climate breakdown and ‘bankruptcy’. So where does speculative design start and the gambling and betting end? Behind each fabular frame is a four ratio problem. Each ratio reflects the level of sacrifice and self-restraint a society is willing to accept, against promises of prosperity and freedom. Some values seem to stabilise a frame while others cause collapse. Get the ratios right and we can have it all. Get them wrong and things get more desperate.
