A multidisciplinary
innovation workshop
Mission rundown
Sept 2017
What is L*unchBox?
A multidisciplinary, design-
led, experiential learning
event for people interested
in design thinking and
innovation.
2009
The idea for a multidisciplinary workshop was
initially seeded in Saint Etienne, France…
2009
… and brought over to the United Kingdom in
the search for a viable partnership between a
strong engineering degree and a strong
design degree.
The rest is history.
Why is there a L*unchBox?
The complexity of modern product and
services exceeds by far the capabilities of
individuals, even talented ones.
Mixing skills & backgrounds sounds obvious,
but not enough…
Some method is necessary.
The topic is not important…
The purpose of the workshop is to create a design-led
framework for approaching all sorts of challenges and
problems in our society.
While our workshop leaders and facilitators are seasoned
design and innovation professionals, their expertise does not
lie in each specific topic of the workshop.Neither are the
participants proficient in the challenge they have to solve.
It is on purpose. And the outcome is truly impressive.
This goes to prove the power of a multidisciplinary, design-
led approach, and the ability of our process to enable
remarkable solutions.
Why is there a L*unchBox?
1.
Platform to expose students to hands-on
team working, on a real-life problem, with
a real-life output.
2.
Lab to explore emerging social issues
with a design-led approach.

What people say about L*unchbox
From both participant and facilitator
views, the L*unchBox workshop is a very
efficient and valuable way to put into practice
number of the theoretical methods to
stimulate and use creativity, after having
seen them only in an academic perspective.
Therefore, it is one of the (too few) bridges
between academic knowledges and industrial
know-hows that could potentially help
differentiate one student from another.”
L*unchBox was the first contact I
had with what I can call "the real
world work environment". It is a very
hands on experiment that pushes
your limits for a week, while also
helping you define your role in a
creative team.”
“ While working through
different sets of idea-generation
methods on a common problem
added to our students’ toolkits, I
felt the face-to-face experiences
of collaborating with design
professionals from over 15
different countries is what sets
L*unchBox apart from other
innovation-centered
collaborations.”
“
What I learned from the L*unchBox
Workshop is working with multi-discipline
members has great value to have creativity,
innovative ideas, and wide insight for design.”
“
“This workshop taught me the
importance of working in a team.
There should not be an innovation
department in our company, but
instead there should be an innovation
mindset. And L*unchBox made me
see the importance of this kind of
thinking.”
“
How do we take our
students’ ideas forward to
organisations that are able
to make them happen?
Help?
Some challenges we’re yet to figure out…
How do we progress from
multidisciplinarity to
multiprofessionality?
Help?

Launch box intro presentation-2018

  • 2. What is L*unchBox? A multidisciplinary, design- led, experiential learning event for people interested in design thinking and innovation.
  • 3. 2009 The idea for a multidisciplinary workshop was initially seeded in Saint Etienne, France…
  • 4. 2009 … and brought over to the United Kingdom in the search for a viable partnership between a strong engineering degree and a strong design degree. The rest is history.
  • 5. Why is there a L*unchBox? The complexity of modern product and services exceeds by far the capabilities of individuals, even talented ones. Mixing skills & backgrounds sounds obvious, but not enough… Some method is necessary.
  • 6. The topic is not important… The purpose of the workshop is to create a design-led framework for approaching all sorts of challenges and problems in our society. While our workshop leaders and facilitators are seasoned design and innovation professionals, their expertise does not lie in each specific topic of the workshop.Neither are the participants proficient in the challenge they have to solve. It is on purpose. And the outcome is truly impressive. This goes to prove the power of a multidisciplinary, design- led approach, and the ability of our process to enable remarkable solutions.
  • 7. Why is there a L*unchBox? 1. Platform to expose students to hands-on team working, on a real-life problem, with a real-life output. 2. Lab to explore emerging social issues with a design-led approach.

  • 39. Ta-daaa! What people say about L*unchbox From both participant and facilitator views, the L*unchBox workshop is a very efficient and valuable way to put into practice number of the theoretical methods to stimulate and use creativity, after having seen them only in an academic perspective. Therefore, it is one of the (too few) bridges between academic knowledges and industrial know-hows that could potentially help differentiate one student from another.” L*unchBox was the first contact I had with what I can call "the real world work environment". It is a very hands on experiment that pushes your limits for a week, while also helping you define your role in a creative team.” “ While working through different sets of idea-generation methods on a common problem added to our students’ toolkits, I felt the face-to-face experiences of collaborating with design professionals from over 15 different countries is what sets L*unchBox apart from other innovation-centered collaborations.” “ What I learned from the L*unchBox Workshop is working with multi-discipline members has great value to have creativity, innovative ideas, and wide insight for design.” “ “This workshop taught me the importance of working in a team. There should not be an innovation department in our company, but instead there should be an innovation mindset. And L*unchBox made me see the importance of this kind of thinking.” “
  • 40. How do we take our students’ ideas forward to organisations that are able to make them happen? Help? Some challenges we’re yet to figure out…
