The Twig Light: Ultra low-cost lighting in Ghanathe nciia
This session describes the development of a new, low cost, sustainable light source for poor villagers in developing countries called the Twig Light. The light makes use of a compact thermoelectric generator sandwiched and providing a thermal bridge between two pieces of ten-centimeter aluminum channel approximately fifteen centimeters in length. The lower section is cooled by sitting it in a small amount of water, while the upper section serves as a combustion chamber in which small pieces of wood or other combustible materials are burned. The subsequent temperature difference across the thermoelectric generator results in enough power to light a bank of LEDs sufficient to illuminate a small room. The technology was distributed in the rural Ghanaian village of Domeabra in the summer of 2009, and the performance will be evaluated during a return visit in 2010.
A DIWO design-and-construction workshop that upcycles recovered materials to convert them into naturban prototypes inserted in local neighbourhoods to start a learn-by-doing-process to add quality of life to the future of the City and citizens.
Irene Stern Butterfly and Pollinator Garden in Fulshear TexasTajana Surlan
City of Fulshear Parks Commission planned an installation of its first Butterfly and Pollinator Garden at the Irene Stern Center in Fulshear, Texas. Starting with goals and planning, it was planned as an ongoing project which fosters community engagement with other organizations and citizen groups. Some of those include Girl and Boy Scouts, Friends of Fulshear Parks, Arts Fulshear, Master Naturalists, etc. It provides water and sustenance to pollinators and migrating butterflies and will apply for Monarch Byway certification with native plants it contains.
When it comes to designing the next generation of home appliances, companies should be looking at technological possibilities as well as considering changes in everything from food science, demographic projections, healthcare, environmental concerns, the economy and commerce. Trends point toward a society of the future that is more urbanised, environmentally- friendly and connected. These have major implications for how people might live and interact with products, information and each other.
In this report, we highlight four emerging trends in home appliances: space efficient, environmentally friendly, connected home, and age-friendly.
