Lateral venous thrombophlebitis
• Also known as lateral sinus thrombosis or Otogenic suppurative
thrombophlebitis.
• It is defined as the simultaneous presence of venous thrombosis and
suppuration in the intracranial cavity.
• Because the sinus is a continuation of the cerebellar dura
mater, extension of an infection by only a few millimeters can
result in meningitis, epidural abscess, subdural empyema,
cerebritis, or cerebellar abscess.
• most commonly Caused by b-hemolytic streptococcus,
Initially mild due to perisinus abscess
Later severe due to raised ICP
• Nausea,vomiting
• Toxic and restless patient
• Otalgia (deep boring ear pain)
• Foul smelling blood tinged ear discharge.

• Total volume:150ml
• Rate of formation:500-600ml/day
• Formation of CSF is 50-70% : choroid plexuses and 30-50%:
50%: blood vessels along the ventricular wall and absorbed by
by arachnoid villis into the dural venous sinus.
• It is Clear, colorless, alkaline fluid with Specific gravity of 1.005
