17. The text is a magazine article. The purpose of the text is to persuade women and
other people interested in fashion to stop wearing fur and to switch to wearing
fake fur. It also aims to inform those who wear fur, that the fur industry is cruel
to animals. The mode of the text is written as it is received visually.Although the
register of the text is high, the text does contain some spoken mode features such
as colloquialisms “fashionistas” and slang “crazy”. This is to create an informal,
friendly tone to advise and persuade young girls that wearing fur is morally
wrong. Creating an informal tone makes the text semi- interactive and more
personal, which are normally spoken mode features. As a result the target
audience, women and girls are more likely to accept the advice. However, other
lexis makes the text a higher register text as shown by the polysyllabic and low
frequency lexis “electrocution…deceptively and endorsement”.This shows that
the text is highly planned and permanent.
