Lady gaga luke o'donnell
1.
2. Hyperreality
Stefani Joanne Angelina Germanotta her real
name has carefully crafted and adapter to the
persona of “Lady Gaga”, a reference to the Queen
song “radio gaga”. This alter ego though maybe
based on Stefani’s own personality and passions
is highly constructed and is the side that she
always shows when interacting with the media or
her fans. This dedication to her image has allowed
her to almost completely disconnected herself
from her true identity and instead be seen as this
fantastical superstar. From her eccentric fashion
sense to her romanticized quotes she truly has
mastered the way of the celebrity. This careful
treading between the realms of fantasy and reality
has proven to be too much even for her at times
often taking times to disappear from the public
eye.
3. Intertextual Reference
In her video for telephone featuring
Beyoncé there numerous references
towards the films of Quentin
Tarantino. From the inclusion of the
“Pussy Wagon” from Kill Bill to the
similar typography from Jackie
Brown and Pulp Fiction to note a few.
Intertextual reference is a common
feature of postmodernism which
Lady Gaga has obviously embraced.
4. Bricolage
Bricolage Is another feature of
Postmodernism Lady Gaga has chosen
to embrace in her music videos. In this
scene from the telephone video she has
chosen to portray the stereotypical
1950’s housewife, though instead of
staying completely true to the
stereotype she puts her own twist on it.
The mis-en-scene and props are used
to help connote the ideas of the era for
example the phrase “Lets make a
sandwich” and wonder bread. This
assortment of ideas and props collated
together has created a bricolage.
5. Parody
Though she does attempt to reference
other texts and particular era’s she
doesn’t always do so completely
seriously. For example in this scene
she is poisoning the pancakes putting
a dark but somewhat humorous twist
on the originally pleasant premise.
This relates to the post modern idea
of parody.
6. Influences
Though most would point to female
stars such as Madonna as Lady
Gaga’s muse, she seems to have
found inspiration in the glam rock
stars of the 70’s. From their eccentric
wardrobe choices to the larger than
life personalities she has truly
managed to channel the energy of the
era whilst still modifying it to make it
appeal to a modern audience.
