Globalization and concerns about sustainability have led companies and consumers to consider localism and environmental impacts. The BP Deepwater Horizon oil spill highlighted the environmental and economic damage that can result from industrial accidents. This event increased public awareness of where products come from and how production impacts the environment. As a response, some communities have adopted local sourcing and transition town initiatives to increase sustainability.

localism
• Increasing concerns about the environment and
unsustainability.
• For example the BP Deep Water Horizon oil spill in 2010
leaked 4.9 million barrels of oil into the Gulf of Mexico.
• Huge environmental (600 turtles and 100 dolphins
died) and economic impact (shrimp, tuna and oyster
fisherman all suffered smaller catches)
• People boycotted BP following the disaster as a result.

• As a result people have been more and more aware of
what they buy and where it comes from and its impacts
