1) Uddhava, an associate of Krishna who resembled him, was sent by Krishna as a messenger to the gopis in Vrindavan. 2) The gopis, upon seeing Uddhava, mistook him for Krishna at first. When they realized he was just a messenger, they accused Krishna of not caring for them anymore since he left. 3) Uddhava delivered Krishna's message to the gopis that the separation they feel from him is only due to their forgetfulness of their true spiritual relationship with Krishna, and that Krishna has not actually left them.
