How do we know what medieval villages looked likeDagmar Seljamäe
Archaeologists used aerial photographs and evidence found below the surface to piece together what the medieval village of Wharram Percy looked like after it had been abandoned by the 1500s. (1) They discovered stone foundations of rectangular houses in rows, as well as fields named "Water Lane", "Towngate", and "Town Street" near the isolated church. (2) Combining this with aerial photographs showing details below ground, archaeologists were able to produce a plan of the village layout including houses, roads, fields, and positions of the manor house and mill near the church.
