• Why KU?
• KU Pilot and Results
• Round 2 Collection
• How to Pledge
• Useful Documents and Links
This Presentation
• Not for profit
• Libraries from around the world collaborate to
share the costs of making books OA
• CC Licences
• Front List Titles (new books)
• No embargo
• Award Winning
• Now inviting libraries to sign up for Round 2
What is Knowledge
Unlatched?
• Sales of academic monographs have declined by 90% over
20 years
• Prices have increased beyond inflation
• Publishers are struggling to cover their costs
• Libraries struggling to afford books
• Academics are struggling to get published
• Readers have limited access to the books they want
Why KU? A Troubled Market
• A very small market (libraries)
• Library budgets under pressure
• The number of monograph titles has increased
• Print runs for each title have decreased
• Publishers must spread the costs of publishing each title
over a smaller number of copies
• Journals have become (much) more expensive
Why Are Books In trouble?
Open Access for Books?
• Digital technology is providing opportunities to widen
access and increase impact
• Research funders are beginning to require Open Access
• Many authors would like Open Access options
• The cost of publishing a 70,000 – 100,000 word monograph
higher than the cost of publishing a 5,000 – 10,000 word
journal article
• HSS research budgets are small
• Some authors aren’t attached to a research budget at all
• Author-side payment approaches being taken up by journals
won’t work
But…

• A sustainable route to OA for Humanities and Social
Science (HSS) books (long-form publications)
• Spread costs of OA across many institutions
globally
• Ensuring that HSS long-form publications are as
accessible as OA science journals
• Help libraries to maximize the positive impact of
spending on books
Knowledge Unlatched Goals
• Knowledge Unlatched is helping libraries from
around the world to coordinate their
monograph purchases
• Libraries can choose to jointly offer a Title Fee
payment to publishers
• In return, publishers make books selected by
the community available on Open Access
How Does it Work?
• Publishers offer books to libraries via KU
• Libraries pledge a capped amount to ‘unlatch’ the
books
• If enough libraries pledge, the libraries share the
payment of a Title Fee for each book
• Publishers make a PDF version available on an OA
license via OAPEN and the HathiTrust
• Books are preserved and discoverable. MARC
records provided
What it Looks Like
• The Title Fee represents the basic cost of
publishing a book
• Payment of the Title Fee allows publishers to feel
confident that they will break even on each title
• Because the Title Fee is a fixed amount as the
number of libraries pledging increases, the cost per
library decreases
What is a Title Fee?
The 2013/14 Pilot
• Proof of concept for Knowledge Unlatched
• 28 new books from 13 publishers
• Literature; History; Politics; Media & Communications
• Needed support from at least 200 libraries from around the
world to become OA
• If 200 libraries pledged cost per library $60 per book
• Nearly 300 libraries pledged. Cost per library $43 per book
Impact?
• Over 1000 downloads per book in first 12 months
• More than 10,000 downloads per book by July 2015
• Downloads from 167 countries
“I have been able to easily share my work with colleagues
and other academics via links in email and twitter…You
can imagine how valuable that instantaneous ability to
share my book proved when events unfolded much faster
than a trip to the library or even a LexisNexis search.”
Jennifer Fredette
“I have seen our book utilized as a reading
resource for specific lesson plans in multiple
undergraduate courses. Because it is available
open access, we know that students were not
burdened financially to obtain it and that
instructors could feel more at liberty to assign
readings and develop lesson plans around the
text and its case studies.”
“I have recently learned that a high school system in
North Carolina has included our text in a list of
recommended readings for instructors around a new
curriculum of courses in earth and environmental
science that discuss energy and climate. Because this
text is available to them at no cost, it is more likely
to be read and utilized for educational outreach
among secondary level instructors and ultimately
students.”
“Because I have learned that it is of interest to
this audience, I will likely engage further and
possibly develop adaptations for high-school
level audiences. These potential opportunities
have clearly been “unlatched” by the open
access license!”

The 2013/14 Pilot • Proof of concept for Knowledge Unlatched • 28 new books from 13 publishers • Literature; History; Politics; Media & Communications • Needed support from at least 200 libraries from around the world to become OA • If 200 libraries pledged cost per library $60 per book • Nearly 300 libraries pledged. Cost per library $43 per book
  • 16. Impact? • Over 1000 downloads per book in first 12 months • More than 10,000 downloads per book by July 2015 • Downloads from 167 countries
  • 17. “I have been able to easily share my work with colleagues and other academics via links in email and twitter…You can imagine how valuable that instantaneous ability to share my book proved when events unfolded much faster than a trip to the library or even a LexisNexis search.” Jennifer Fredette
  • 18. “I have seen our book utilized as a reading resource for specific lesson plans in multiple undergraduate courses. Because it is available open access, we know that students were not burdened financially to obtain it and that instructors could feel more at liberty to assign readings and develop lesson plans around the text and its case studies.”
  • 19. “I have recently learned that a high school system in North Carolina has included our text in a list of recommended readings for instructors around a new curriculum of courses in earth and environmental science that discuss energy and climate. Because this text is available to them at no cost, it is more likely to be read and utilized for educational outreach among secondary level instructors and ultimately students.”
  • 20. “Because I have learned that it is of interest to this audience, I will likely engage further and possibly develop adaptations for high-school level audiences. These potential opportunities have clearly been “unlatched” by the open access license!”

Editor's Notes

  1. Thanks very much for joining us. I am pleased to introduce Lucy Montgomery, who isDeputy Director at Knowledge Unlatched. She is also the Director of the Centre for Culture and Technology at Curtin University. She is joined here today by Christina Emery – Partnerships Manager at Knowledge Unlatched, as well as Celeste Feather from Lyrasis. We are hoping that, between them they will be able to answer any questions that you might have about Round 2 and the pledging process.
  2. Thanks very much Jill – and hello everyone. I hope that many of you will now be familiar with Knowledge Unlatched and what we are trying to achieve. But, for the benefit of anyone learning about Knowledge Unlatched for the first time through this webinar, I’m going to start this presentation by very briefly explaining why we set up Knowledge Unlatched and how our model works. Round 2, which we are now inviting libraries to sign up for, follows on from a very successful pilot, which ran in 2013 and 14. I’m going to talk a little bit about the results of the pilot, before taking you through the Round 2 offering in detail. Christina Emery, KU’s Partnerships Manager, is going to take you through the pledging process. Finally, we’ll finish with some information about KU’s plans for future rounds, and useful documents and resources for librarians interested in signing up or finding out more about what we are doing and how you can get involved.
  3. So we’ll start with what Knowledge Unlatched is. Knowledge Unlatched is a not for profit initiative helping libraries from around the world to share the costs of making books Open Access. As more libraries join in the greater the cost savings become for individual libraries.   At the moment we are focused on front-list titles. Which means that we are dealing with forthcoming books – not backlists.   And by Open Access we mean available to any one in the world to read or download for free, on a Creative Commons license, as soon as a book is published. Knowledge Unlatched is an award winning project: We received the IFLA/Brill Open Access Award in 2014; And a few weeks ago we received the Curtin University Award for Best Innovation in Education. And we are now inviting libraries to support our Round 2 Collection.
  4. When we set out to design and pilot the Knowledge Unlatched model we were responding to some very specific challenges facing specialist scholarly books. In spite of the fact that Humanities and Social Science (HSS) monographs remain important for academic communities all over the world, sales of this kind of book have experienced dramatic declines. Some estimates suggest that sales have fallen by as much as 90% over the past 20 years. The average monograph is now selling just two or three hundred copies.   Monograph publishers have found themselves caught in a negative cycle: Declining sales have resulted in higher prices, as the costs of publishing a book are spread across a smaller number of copies. This, in turn, has limited markets for specialist scholarly books even further.   Its a situation that has very real consequences for libraries, authors, readers and publishers.    Many libraries are struggling to afford books.   Authors are finding it harder to get published. Many readers are struggling to gain access to the books that they want, in spite of the possibilities of digital technology. And monograph publishing itself is marginally profitable at best and, in many cases needs to be subsidized.
  5. There are numerous reasons for the challenges facing specialist scholarly books, and I’m not going to go into all of them today.   But one important factor has been the role of libraries as the key market for monographs.   The role of libraries as the main purchasers of specialist scholarly books has left monographs vulnerable to contractions in library budgets.   Library book budgets haven’t kept pace with growth in the number of authors publishing new books. And sharp increases in the costs of maintaining journal subscriptions have put libraries under pressure: Leaving even less money to support books.
  6. All of that means that the Open Access challenge has arrived at a moment when the systems that support specialist scholarly books are already under strain. Digital technologies are presenting scholarly communities with opportunities to widen access to content and increase the impact of their work. Research funders are requiring open access. And many authors are now actively seeking out Open Access options for their books.
  7. However, the models being developed to support open access for journal articles are unlikely to work for book-length publications. The costs of publishing a 70,000 — 100,000-word book are simply a lot higher than they are for a 5,000 – 10,000 word journal article. High costs of publishing mean that ‘gold’ routes to open access are not a practical option for most authors of monographs. Creative approaches to supporting the publication of Open Access monographs are needed. We felt that our challenge was to find ways to help libraries to use their limited budgets more effectively, so that books didn’t find themselves locked behind PayWalls in a world where the journal literature is moving towards Open Access.
  8. Which is why we started Knowledge Unlatched. I’m now going play you a one minute video explaining our model.
  9. Knowledge Unlatched has an office in London, but we are very much an international project – and I’m giving this presentation from my office in Australia.   Our partners include HathiTrust and OAPEN – which both host the open access versions of Knowledge Unlatched titles. All of our books are preserved by CLOCKSS and Portico. We are working with Lyrasis to handle North-American library sign up and Jisc Collections to handle sign-up and invoicing of libraries in the UK. We also received key early support from the Big Innovation Center, the British Library Trust, the Open Society Foundation and three founding Australian libraries.
  10. Knowledge Unlatched is focused on creating a sustainable route to Open Access for book length Humanities and Social Science publications.   We are working to do this by helping libraries to spread the costs of Open Access across many institutions, globally.   All of us working on Knowledge Unlatched are motivated by a desire to ensure that Humanities and Social Science long-form publications are as accessible as open access journal articles.   And we think that efficient coordination can ensure that library spending on books supports the widest possible access to scholarship. By working together, Libraries can maximize the positive impact of their book budgets.
  11.   The basic idea is that Knowledge Unlatched helps libraries from around the world to coordinate their monograph purchases.   Our reason for doing this is so that libraries can offer publishers a Title Fee for books that a community of libraries indicate that they would like to include in their collections.
  12. From a library perspective, this is what the process looks like:   Publishers offer books from their forthcoming catalogues to libraries via Knowledge Unlatched. Libraries take a look at the books on offer and decide whether they are appropriate for their collections and the communities they serve.   If they are, Libraries pledge a capped amount to ‘unlatch’ the books   If enough libraries pledge, the libraries share the payment of a Title Fee for each book.   Publishers make a fully downloadable PDF version of books that are unlatched available on an open access license via OAPEN and the HathiTrust upon publication   The books are preserved through Portico and CLOCKSS and made discoverable via the usual channels. And MARC records are provided to libraries.
  13. The Title Fee represents the basic cost of publishing a book, including a margin for publisher overheads.   Payment of the Title Fee allows a publisher to feel confident that they will not make a loss on a book, even if it is made available on an Open Access license.   During the 2013/14 pilot we established conclusively that publishers are willing to make books available on an Open Access license if they know that their core publishing costs will be covered by the Title Fee if their books is selected to become open.
  14. In 2013/14 we piloted the Knowledge Unlatched model. We invited libraries to support a 28 book Pilot Collection through Knowledge Unlatched.   The collection focused on Literature; History; Politics; Media & Communication. The Pilot was a proof of concept exercise for Knowledge Unlatched, and we needed at least 200 libraries from around the world to sign up. If only 200 libraries had signed up, the average cost of each book in the Pilot Collection would have been $60. In fact nearly 300 libraries from 24 countries pledged their support for the collection. That brought the cost of each book down to just $43 for each of the libraries that participated.
  15. But the pilot wasn’t only a success from a library sign-up point of view. We have also been able to see the impact that Open Access has had on the use of the books in the Pilot Collection. The OAPEN platform has been able to provide us with Counter compliant usage data from the outset. Hathi Trust is moving towards providing being able to provide counter compliant usage data now. More than 1,000 downloads for each book were recorded in the collection’s first twelve months online, just via the OAPEN platform. That figure had increased to 10,000 downloads per book by July 2015 – with downloads recorded from 167 countries.
  16. The feedback that we have received from authors who took part in the KU pilot has been overwhelmingly positive. Authors have been really delighted by their ability to share links to the full text of their work via email and social media – and have reported that this ability has helped them to engage with the media more effectively.
  17. Authors have also reported that having their books included in the Knowledge Unlatched program has helped to lower barriers to the use of their work for undergraduate teaching.
  18. As well as for adoption as a resource for high school teachers and students.
  19. And that this experience has helped them to identify new audiences for their research, and prompted them to think about how they might further engage with those audiences through their next publications.
  20. This is a list of the 13 publishers that made books available through the Pilot.
  21. An additional 13 publishers have been added for Round 2 – bringing our total to 26 well respected monograph presses.
  22. Round 2 – which is now open to libraries – consists of 8 packages of 78 titles from 26 respected publishers. We are asking libraries to select at least 6 packages in order to participate in Round 2. But we are hoping that many will choose to support all 8 – and so far the majority of libraries that have signed up for Round 2 have chosen to support all 8 packages. The minimum pledge needed to unlatch 6 packages is $2,643 and the maximum amount that libraries would pledge to receive all 78 titles is $3,891. For this round the average price per book is starting at just under $50, which is based on 300 libraries pledging. As more libraries join, then the average price per book will drop even further. In many cases, these may be titles that you were planning to order anyway, so this would be a cost savings for your library.
  23. The Round 2 collection is made up of 6 subject specific packages, focusing on Anthropology, Literature, History, Media and Communications, and Politics. Round 2 also includes 2 publisher specific packages, which are being offered by the University of Michigan Press and Duke University Press. The publisher specific packages are made up of 10 books each from a range of disciplines.
  24. Books being offered to Libraries in Round 2 were selected by the Knowledge Unlatched Library Selection Taskforce. Once publishers had submitted lists of books that they would be willing to include in Round 2 we asked Librarians to rank them. The top 78 books ranked by the Library Taskforce have been curated into the packages now on offer.
  25. Deductions against additional purchases of the books unlatched through Round 2 are also being offered by the participating publishers. If a library orders, or indicates to us that it plans to order, a print or closed e-book format of any title in the Round 2 Collection via any channel then the total Unlatching fee that is paid to Knowledge Unlatched will be reduced. We have allowed publishers to nominate an appropriate deduction– and deductions range from between 20 and 50% on a publisher by publisher basis. An overview of deductions is available on the KU site. I’m now going to hand over to Christina Emery, Partnerships Manager for Knowledge Unlatched. Christina is going to take you through the nuts and bolts of how to pledge.
  26. The pledging period is now open and will close on 31st January 2016. Simply go to our Collections Site and either sign in (for Charter Members) or register (for new libraries). UK participants should register on the JISC Collections’ website. When you have logged in, you can view the packages and select which you would like to help make Open Access.
  27. Here is the overview of the Packages (Menu: Round 2, Title Packages). You can view the titles in each package without having to log in, but in order to participate and select them, you will need to log in to your account.
  28. When you click on a package, in this case Anthropology, you will be shown a list of all titles in that package. By click on one of the books, a light box will appear with its metadata and you can browse through each title by clicking on the light box’s arrow. A comprehensive title list is available in our Downloads section (link at end of this presentation) in either PDF or Excel.
  29. Once you have made your selections of a minimum of 6 out of the 8 packages, you will be asked to declare any purchases of additional formats of titles in the Round 2 Collection. You can log in at any time to add this information or change your package selections. By declaring purchases of additional formats, you are stating that you have or intend to buy another format of a title in the Round 2 Collection by the end of April 2016. It works on an honour system like in the Pilot. This then entitles you to a deduction off your KU invoice. The deductions range from 20-50% on a publisher-by-publisher basis. An overview is available on our website.
  30. NB The majority of titles will be unlatched in March/April 2016 if enough pledges are received. Some titles have a later publication date, so they will be unlatched later upon publication. Only packages which secured enough pledges will be unlatched.
  31. As KU scales up, further infrastructure will be put in place to enable us to hold the elections for the Collections Committee. KU will also look to further involve librarians by asking them which publishers they would like to see offering titles through KU. In future collections, KU will offer more choice regarding how the packages are assembled and which subject areas are included.
