2. Narrative
• She’s giving an insight into her childhood desire being in a
relationship and having a family. Now that she has grown up she
has realised her childhood dream isn’t actually as she thought.
• ‘I wanna settle down’ - “I” connotes that this is about her and her
feelings towards settling down rather than including her partner in
this decision.
• Her own desire where she has her life planned out. The mannequin
has no voice and that is all one sided.
• Intertextuality - 1930’s expectation of marriage and relationships
which is negative and false.
• ‘Run from Angela Vickers’ reference to a place in the sun.
• She uses a nursery rhyme which show us a childish side to it.
3. Camera
• Camera shot of little girls mouth, the viewer doesn’t know who she
is.
• Two same shots are used but in one a man is in bed and in the
other one he is gone and she is now making more of an effort of
looking good.
• Another girl looks into the camera and then at the other girls
boyfriend which makes the audience feel uncomfortable.
• Camera movement is static the whole way through and the story is
told by the actor's movement.
• The high angle shot used gives off the impression of the dollhouse
effect. The composition of the shot is very tight which also gives off
the dollhouse effect.
• There are a lot of close ups of Kimbra which shows she is telling the
story. She is known to be a narrator.
4. Editing
• The cuts happen on the beat which makes the song more
memorable thus promoting artists song and popularity.
• One scene especially has quick cuts, the first young girls
begins to clean ‘her’ home, prepare a meal and dresses.
• They have to chose to use quick, simple cuts instead of a
lot.
• There is a montage of dolls which could make the audience
feel uncomfortable.
• The chronological order of the lyrics, like fairy tales.
• Lip synching is used for the majority of the video, to
promote her
• Old fashioned video used which links to settling
down which is traditional.
5. Star Image/Performance
• Combined with pop, jazz, R&B, indie rock.
• Always has short black curly hair, where she looks
like a doll in various videos.
• Not very sexualised like other women.
• Appeals to be like a hipster as she wears things
like flouncy dresses.
• She sings as a storyteller.
• Throughout the music video she uses the dancing
girls to help.
