3. Shot 1
• This shot shows a little girl smiling (she is playing with her friends)
• This screen shot portrays her as young innocent
• There is no dialogue at this point but there is a soundtrack
• The soundtrack is asynchronous as the scene shows three little girls playing with their
dolls and china tea cups however the music in the back ground is sinister and scary
foreshadowing what is going to happen next
• This shot is lit by daylight only casting shadows
4. Shot 2
• This shot shows the three girls now stood up walking towards the window
• Their old fashion outfits show the era they’re from and show that they’re well kept
young girls
• Their facial expressions have changed and look like they’re in a trance
• This begins to sync with the sound track as the girls begin to behave in a unusual
manor
• At this point we have no idea why they’re behaving like this
5. Shot 3
• Shot 3 is a wide shot showing us the rest of the girls room
• The women in black is in the right side of this shot
• At this point in the film the audience don’t know who this is creating suspense
• The fact we can’t see her face and cant even see her very well leaves the audience
wondering who she is, what impact she has to the story line and also suggests she
wants to hide her identity
7. Shot 1
• This is a close up shot of a women comforting her partner
• This instantly suggests to the audience that she is a kind and caring character portraying her as
innocent
• The fact that she is comforting him because of a bad dream could foreshadow that he is going
to experience something bad during this horror film.
8. Shot 2
• This shot shows the women holding their child and saying good-bye to her partner who is
leaving for work
• This suggests that she is a stay at home mum supporting the idea that she is kind and caring
and she is looking after their child
• The characters also show to the audience that they have a strong relationship as she
comforted him earlier, they’re close and she is now seeing him off to work
• The characters behaviour could lead to the audience liking this characters
9. Shot 3
• This mid shot shows the main women looking over her balcony
• She is smiling and seems like she is enjoying the view suggesting that she is happy with her
situation
• This could portray her to the audience as an innocent character meaning it may have a
larger effect on them when something bad happens to her making the film more gripping,
interesting and scary
11. Shot 1
• The first character we see is this women who is heading outside late at night in her night
wear, this makes her seem mysterious. This is also helped by the fact that we do not see
her face hiding her identity
• She is carrying a knife which instantly suggests to the audience that she is dangerous
• This builds a tense atmosphere, helped by the low-key lighting, which makes the
situation feel unsafe putting the audience on edge right from the beginning of the film
12. Shot 2
• The second character in this film we see is a baby, it is wrapped in a white blanket foreshadowing
it’s innocents
• We don’t see the babies face, but can hear the baby crying showing to the audience that it is in
distress
• The audience may feel nervous at this point as the baby is placed in a bath with running water,
however they may feel less sympathy for this baby as they haven’t seen its face so can’t image
the whole scene. This could suggest that the women that put him/her in there feels no remorse
13. Conclusion
From looking into character representation I have realised that you can
learn a lot about a character by how they’re shown to the audience for
the first time. From this I am going to make sure that the people in my
film have the right style of costume and have the right body
language/facial expressions to give the first impression I desire to make
sure they create the right impact on the rest of the film.
