2. Generic Characteristics• Genre-POP
• Pop genre stereotypically are massively over the top & cheesy music video’s as it
connotes the personality of the pop genre audience! They are usually high tempo,
upbeat and have positive energy with them! Pop songs all tell a story within the lyrics
therefore this story is then represented throughout the music video.
• In this genre there are many different sorts of artists, there are soloists and bands etc.
They can be Mainstream pop artist but also there are many artists that are different and
unique in this genre. This is important as the pop genre is very crowded and
competitive, therefore many artists try different ways to stand out and set new trends in
this genre.
• The setting of the music video can vary a lot. The background can be very simplistic to
create a pure innocent feel which symbolises the pop genre audience. They use green
screens and edit it to have bright coloured backgrounds to synchronise dance in front
of as they sometimes aren't realistic. How ever they can also have very busy
naturalistic background & sometimes is simple and just haves the band playing
instruments but this is less common for this genre.
• Women and men in this genre set new trends and follow the current fashions. Women
are stereotypically seen in very revealing clothes and acting sexy and suggestive,
however this is slowly changing as we can see if girls bands like little mix who are now
giving off how there all sassy and have a equal level of authority to men, and are
making sounds with the topic of women empowerment. Men are seen as cute,
handsome and dreaming therefore making pop teens fall in love with them.
• Topics of the music are usually created to target the young teenagers who listen to
pop, therefore their usually about love/breakups, the aim is to base it on a topic that
they can relate to.
3. Examples
• In this pop music video as you can see the setting has been created with
the used of a green screen creating a naturalistic forest setting behind
Katy Perry singing! This is so it entertains the audience and helps explain
the story behind the music video as the pop audience loves the story
behind the song and if it hasn't got one it may not be as successful.
At the beginning of the music video the male in it is portrayed in a very
stereotypical way. As I mention before men are seen as handsome and dreamy
heroes, waiting to save the day. This is too attract the female audience.
The story behind this song is about women empowerment and how
she's going to rule the forest, this is starting to be a new trend
approaching this genre! This is attracting both female and male as
males see her as hot and impressive and females are proud and
agree of the morals behind the story! Even though the story is told in
a very non naturalistic way its still easy to understand and follow
which is stereotypical for the pop genre.
Even though the music video does symbolise women
empowerment, it also shows women in the stereotypical
way as well. Katy Perry's outfit is sexy and is very revealing
to attract the older teen lads in, this theory is used often.
4. Relationship between: Lyrics and
the visuals
“I got the eye of the tiger, a fighter, dancing through the fire / ‘Cause I am a champion and
you’re gonna hear me ROAR / Louder, louder than a lion / ‘Cause I am a champion and
you’re gonna hear me ROAR.”
‘Eye of the Tiger’ is a song by Survivor, which was huge in the ’80s and used in ‘Rocky
III.’ It focuses on triumphing over anything and anyone in life that hurts you. The lion is
the king/queen of the jungle, and Katy Perry is using that metaphor to the fullest. But it’s
so easy to relate to, and that’s why fans have responded so fervently. you Can see this
when she’s trying to fight the lion visually, showing how she has to fight scary objects to
win the fight. Also the symbolic freeze frame of her sat on her thrones with the animals by
her to show that if you try hard you can become higher and everyone who was bigger
than you the rolls are reversed and there obeying your rules.
5. Relationship between: Music
and visuals
• As i said earlier the settings are
stereotypically used to help tell the story!
As the music builds up the story
progresses, the more dramatic the music
gets the more she becomes in power and
starts to win her fights. Therefore
stereotypically it gets you emotionally
attached with the story and engages you.
This is very stereotypical for the pop
genre
6. Close up/ Star Image Motifs/
voyeurism
Katy Perry uses a lot of close ups in her music, she uses
closeups in this music video to make us feel involved in
what she is doing, even though were not. This close up I've
screen shotted makes us feel like the tiger spying on her
watching her grow and were becoming more intimidating
by her. Also were seeing her through the males eye, as
she is showering naked symbolising that boys see women
as prey and an attractive women. Meaning that Katy perry
has deliberately put this close up in to attract an male
audience.
Katy Perry's star image has always been her beauty
and able to attract an male audience. Therefore she is
always wearing revealing clothes and acting sexy,
because this is her style image she has inserted it into
this music video even though its not stereotypical for
what the message behind the lyrics is about. Even
though its showing women empowerment she is still
letting herself be male prey, but she would loose fans if
she doesn't keep her star image up.
This shows us that there is voyeurism towards Katy
perry because this is simply her star image so its what
makes her the celeb she is.
7. Performance, Narrative or
Concept
• Even though all threes are in the music video a little bit somewhere
it is mostly a performance video.
• Its all about the symbolic story throughout all of the lyrics and
actions she’s doing. Very stereotypical for the pop genre as they are
always performed all over the top and always have a massive story
behind it to connect on an emotional level with the audience. Katy
Perry is constantly performing for it to attract the audience and
making them feel special like she’s just performing for them.
• The concept they’ve chosen to promote is not an obscure one even
if it isn't as stereotypical as others. the concept of women
empowerment is starting to become more typical and more common
point to be putting across.
