The response spectrum method (RSM) for seismic analysis, developed by the author in 1962, produces inaccurate results and should be terminated. Time-history analysis can now easily and accurately calculate demand-to-capacity ratios for structural elements at all points in time, unlike RSM. The author recommends engineers adopt performance-based design using nonlinear time-history analysis methods like fast nonlinear analysis, which has been verified to agree with laboratory tests and allows designing structures to be repairable after major earthquakes.
