2. The first part of the trailer subverting from conventions, as titles are normally shown at the end, we
are introduced to the name of the film at the beginning and the end to make sure people remember
it. This gives the audience an impression of the film and possibly the plot. In terms of font the title is
in block capitals except for the letter ‘I’. This could represent the independence of the film or
character . It also could suggest a young person being surrounded by adults like the capital letters
surrounding the lower case letter. The colour scheme is very basic and plain, white letters against
black background to highlight the title. The colours could even represent difference of characters
either relating to their race or the different areas they grow up in. The distribution company is
shown at the start as well. At the end we see text come onto the screen saying “Before adulthood
comes kidulthood” the slogan promotes social realism and is a great way to get people talking about
the film.
The film was produced by small independent UK industries, Stealth Films,
Cipher Films, TMC Films and received funding also from the UK Film
council. Many other companies were involved in distribution and providing
equipment for the production, such as Revolver Entertainment and Kodak.
3. The establishing shot here sets the scene and already
we can see that the film is based in London, gives us
an insight of what type of film and genre this is
going to be. The estate shown represents youth and
gang culture. The weather is of gloom and doom
setting the mood of the film. This is going to be
interesting.
This low angle shot is powerful because
the audiences has become inferior and
vulnerable at the hands of this 3 teenage
characters. They are engaging in violence
together, normal for all of them. This
connects us with the trailer making us
think that we are being attacked.
The close up of this shit It is an extreme close up
shot, that emphasises her youth and her smoking. It
blurs out the surrounding background, making it
clear to the audience that what they want you to see
is her use of drugs and how young she is. It
highlights youth issues.
Drug and alcohol abuse is shown throughout
the trailer, showing drug packets, then smoking
drugs and also 'necking' bottle's of alcohol this
shows they are associated with drug and alcohol
use, doing this on a regular basis.
4. Immediately, through the fast paced editing you
can see that this film is dealing with gang related
violence and includes alcohol/drugs, gangs,
relationships and bullying etc. through the
montage of clips flashing. This can represent the
speed of teenage life and how fast it goes. It can
also represent the abuse of drugs visually and
finally it can represent how fast life flashes before
your eyes.
The editing is mainly formed of quick cuts from
one scene to another in a fast paced motion with
some cuts including fades/flashes, usually used in
trailers to create a sense of enigma and we’re
intrigued by everything that’s happening around
us.
Because there are so many things going on at
once, we are more excited for the film release and
actually make sense of what happens.
Normally, when a DJ
scratches a CD, they are
about to go introduce or
change into a new track. As
the trailer opens with that
sound and the montage then
develops we go into a tense
sound of high violins and a
strong beat with aggressive
rap music stimulating the
sense of enigma and
connoting the genre to
audiences. This plays
throughout the whole film.
When the music pace
increases, the spoken
dialogue gets much more
serious and aggressive .
At the end of the trailer the
non-diagetic sound of a
loud scream from a girl,
which creates the audience
to wonder after watching
the intensity of the film
what had happened to her.
5. Nothing says teenagers than tracksuits, jeans, hoodies, hates
etc. Here the costume meets the stereotype and also one of
them is holding a bottle. This representation is negative but
realistic.
Drug use is heavily associated with young
people so this close up of pills stimulates our
enigma but also meets our attitudes of plot
prediction.
The colours of the film are constantly dull such as
grey, black and white and this sets the mood of the
film. Weapons are shown in almost every scene,
connoting that this is normal for youth and is part
of their life.
Weaponry is
An issue in youth
culture and we see it
in the trailer a lot
again negative but
realistic
representation
