Key disruption through Digital Connectivity in Manufacturing
Value Chain
The recent trends in manufacturing technology adaptation making the remarkable change in the shop
floors and beyond it. The entire value chain of product realization from a concept to in-hand of
customers getting changed a lot. These changes are putting the reflections in terms of manufacturing
quality, product lifecycle, waste eliminations (MURA, MURI, MUDA). and connected users.
What I believe is, “connected user” a very vital term here.
The key manufacturing area which are going to be impacted most:
Operations Management:
the factory operation will not be merely a production operation after getting embed with this new
technology. Those operations will be converted into the smart
operations. And there will be lot more activity with operation
than the performing the activities over the product being
build.
Lot of edge device will be associated with the operation
modeling and sending the real-time data into space.
Those real-time data will help to decided the action in
immediate next operation over that unit of product.
Manufacturing quality and real-time insight will be accessible to anytime and anywhere.
Inventory management:
The product inventory or raw material inventory will be changed in to concept of Collaborative
Inventory. Now a days, two practices are popular.
VMI, a clear message that vendor has to manage the raw material/SFG inventory will supply to
customer as on when required. Specially a JIS or JIT principal.

And the second kind of inventory management is very ambiguous.
Either supplier or customer holds the maximum inventory. Who shall
hold, that is depended upon who is more powerful?
But after the digital connectivity among the enterprises, the third
concept will evolve and that is the collaborative inventory. Both
supplier and manufacturer will share the planning, scheduling and
order information so that material will be moved on 3R principal. Supply chain and transportation
digitalization will be key thing here.
Employees Safety: Employee safety will definitely be going to be improved a lot with help of AI,
Visual AI. AI will improve the operation and machine interaction in
real-time. System will measure the safety regulation and
precaution checks.
Machine which critical to operators will be fashioned with the
machine learning solution and helps to improve the operator and
operation safety too.
Equipment Management:
An equipment in the connected enterprise will not be just a hardware equipment. It will be a
Connected Assets in the manufacturing space and the out-side value chain. That smart equipment will
behave like intelligent device. They, themselves ask when they
need to repair. Systems will also help into knowing the cause of
failure and possible resolutions.
In such a way, predictive maintenance and anomaly detection
manufacturing going to expect the remarkable improvement in the
available time and OEE.
Customers:
With the change in technological development. The product and
market will more likely to be driven by the Customer. The
configurable product and ETO (engineering to order) shall be take
place.
Customer would be able to know, how their product going to be
built. They would be able to know when their product going to be
built and hence there could be facility to change in the
configuration at any moment before start of production.

Paperless:
Of course, there are many manufacturing enterprises has taken this
initiative seriously and going paperless. But beyond the
manufacturing shopfloor, communication is going to be paperless.
With the help of digital manufacturing, all the compliance,
approvals, reports, tracking and daily checks going to absolutely
paperless.
Conclusion:
So, an enterprise has to undergo with digital transformation not just to gain the high gain directly but
to be sustain into the market. There may be many industries or manufacturing doing remarkable with
less digitization or automation but there is definite threat for them tomorrow if not going through
with the digital change.
