for student satisfaction(National Student

understand different disciplines.

about their cultures and backgrounds. The teaching here is of a very high

with a choice of modules in each, providing additional
flexibility.
Popular combinations currently include:
• Business Management and Marketing
• International Relations and International Business
• Computer Science and Finance
• Media Communications and Culture
and Business Management
What is a dual honours degree?
A dual honours degree allows you to study two
degree subjects in-depth and in equal amounts,
over three years.
What can it do for you?
Today’s employers are looking for adaptable, multi-skilled
graduates who understand different disciplines. A dual
honours degree will widen your skills base so that you
can stand out in the job market. All of the dual honours
degree combinations are fully recognised by employers
and professions, so you can be confident that you will learn
the skills and knowledge you need to establish a successful
career in your chosen field.
Dual honours degrees broaden your knowledge and your
career prospects by giving you the flexibility to design
your studies around your career ambitions and the
subjects that interest you most.
I’m interested in artificial intelligence and computing,
as well as business. One of the reasons I came to Keele
University is because they provide different, unusual
types of dual honours degrees.

Preparing for university is one of the most important

and academic knowledge you need to succeed in your
university degree, so that you can go on to graduate and
work in your chosen career.

University. You’ll participate in tutorials, seminars and
lectures so that you are well prepared to progress with
your degree studies.
When you join the International Study Centre you will take
the first step on a journey towards lifelong success.
Keele is a really good university. I like the teaching style. In Ghana
they tend to spoon-feed you, but here you have to think for yourself.
You have to study on your own. They test us more. That’s how it is in
the real world, that’s how it is in the professional world.
My dream is to work for a prestigious computer firm like Microsoft,
then go back to Ghana and start my own software business.

Q: What is the campus like at Keele?
A: Keele must be one of the most beautiful
campuses in the UK. From my office window I’ve
seen hares running around outside and quite often
hear and see buzzards and curlews flying over
the fields beyond. For those who prefer city life,
Manchester and Liverpool are not far away on the
train and London is only an hour and a half away.
Q: What would you say is the
most satisfying aspect of your job?
A: Seeing the students succeed and go on to do well
on their degree programmes. It’s always nice to
bump into our International Study Centre alumni on
campus, sometimes they even buy me a coffee.
Q: Why is it good for international
students to start their studies at
the International Study Centre?
A: We offer a team of tutors that students can get
to know really well. At the International Study Centre
all of the classes are in the same location and all of
our students are in a similar situation, which can stop
students who have sometimes never been outside
their own country from feeling lost.
Q: What was your first day at the
International Study Centre like?
A: Probably the same as for a new student –
exciting, but also a bit daunting.
Q: Do you have any tips or advice for
new students?
A: You’ve come here to study, so that has to be your
top priority, but don’t forget to have some fun.
Find out what social activities the university, North
Staffordshire and the UK can offer, there’s a lot
going on.

Q: What subjects do you teach?
A: I teach Media and English to the International
Year One students. This diversity of teaching, and
my life experiences, give me a wide perspective of
the different challenges my students will face in their
careers, and ties in with one of the reasons Keele is
renowned: their dual honours degrees.
Q: What did you do before
becoming a teacher?
A: I am a photographer and videographer with a
lot of experience with the BBC and the UK National
Health Service (NHS). I have been teaching for over
25 years.
Q: Could you tell us about
your students at the International
Study Centre?
A: I know all of my students by their names. I try to
build strong relationships with them and address
their specific needs. Media students have lots of
ideas. I help them focus and give structure to those
ideas so they become a reality.
Q: Could you tell us about the
technology you use in class?
A: We keep the courses as current as possible, using
the latest digital cameras and computers, uploading
the results to the Internet and promoting them with
QR codes.
Q: What are the facilities on
campus like?
A: The International Study Centre students get a
student card that gives 24/7 access to the state-of-
the-art facilities in the media faculty, including fully
equipped photography and video studios, and the
latest Mac computers. Students can also borrow a
wide range of cameras and lenses.

Our Student Enrolment Advisers speak a variety of
languages, and understand several more. We will do
our best to contact you in your preferred language.
Important Information
This prospectus is correct at the time of going to print.
However, between publication and the academic year to
which it relates, some of the information may change. It is
very important that you check our website www.keeleisc.com
before making an application, as some details relating to the
course, fees and other costs, as well as related services, may
have been updated.
We will do all that we reasonably can to provide
educational services as described in the prospectus,
on the website, or in other documents issued by us, to
appropriately enrolled students. Sometimes circumstances
beyond our control mean that we cannot provide the
educational services described, for example:
(a) industrial action by staff or third parties
(b) the unanticipated departure of key members of staff
(c) power failure
(d) acts of terrorism
(e) damage to buildings or equipment
(f) the acts of any governmental or local authority
(g) where the numbers recruited to a course are so low
that it is not possible to deliver an appropriate quality of
education for students enrolled on it.
In these circumstances, we will take all reasonable steps to
disruption to those students who are affected, for example
by offering students the opportunity, where reasonably
possible, to move to another course, another institution
or by delivering a modified version of the same course.
However, to the full extent that is permitted by law, we
exclude liability for any loss and/or damage suffered by any
applicant or student as a result of such circumstances.
You must have personal insurance
It is essential that international students have
the protection of personal insurance whilst in the
UK. To cover you as a student at the International
Study Centre, you may purchase our “Study Care”
insurance cover. This policy will cover you for loss
of personal possessions, travel delay, as well as
providing medical insurance until the end of your
International Study Centre academic programme.
You can purchase Study Care Insurance as part of
your application process. If you prefer not to take
out Study Care insurance, you must provide proof
of alternative adequate insurance cover.
For more information, please visit keele.ac.uk/isc
We will use all reasonable endeavours to deliver the course
in accordance with the description applied to it in the
prospectus (as up-dated from time to time on the website
or elsewhere) for the academic year in which you begin the
course. However, we reserve the right to make reasonable
changes to the course (including to the content and
syllabus) where developments in the subject area and/or
accrediting bodies make that necessary, or to the location
of the course or the method of delivery or assessment of
the course in order to deliver a better quality of educational
experience to students. We will aim to keep the changes
to the minimum necessary to achieve the required quality
of experience and will notify and consult with affected
students in advance about any changes required. If we
change your course and you are not satisfied with the
changes, you will be offered the opportunity to withdraw
from the programme and, if required, reasonable support to
transfer to another provider.

  • 26. Q: What is the campus like at Keele? A: Keele must be one of the most beautiful campuses in the UK. From my office window I’ve seen hares running around outside and quite often hear and see buzzards and curlews flying over the fields beyond. For those who prefer city life, Manchester and Liverpool are not far away on the train and London is only an hour and a half away. Q: What would you say is the most satisfying aspect of your job? A: Seeing the students succeed and go on to do well on their degree programmes. It’s always nice to bump into our International Study Centre alumni on campus, sometimes they even buy me a coffee. Q: Why is it good for international students to start their studies at the International Study Centre? A: We offer a team of tutors that students can get to know really well. At the International Study Centre all of the classes are in the same location and all of our students are in a similar situation, which can stop students who have sometimes never been outside their own country from feeling lost. Q: What was your first day at the International Study Centre like? A: Probably the same as for a new student – exciting, but also a bit daunting. Q: Do you have any tips or advice for new students? A: You’ve come here to study, so that has to be your top priority, but don’t forget to have some fun. Find out what social activities the university, North Staffordshire and the UK can offer, there’s a lot going on. David Gould Head of English at Keele International Study Centre Meet your teachers 26
  • 27. keele.ac.uk/isc 27 Q: What subjects do you teach? A: I teach Media and English to the International Year One students. This diversity of teaching, and my life experiences, give me a wide perspective of the different challenges my students will face in their careers, and ties in with one of the reasons Keele is renowned: their dual honours degrees. Q: What did you do before becoming a teacher? A: I am a photographer and videographer with a lot of experience with the BBC and the UK National Health Service (NHS). I have been teaching for over 25 years. Q: Could you tell us about your students at the International Study Centre? A: I know all of my students by their names. I try to build strong relationships with them and address their specific needs. Media students have lots of ideas. I help them focus and give structure to those ideas so they become a reality. Q: Could you tell us about the technology you use in class? A: We keep the courses as current as possible, using the latest digital cameras and computers, uploading the results to the Internet and promoting them with QR codes. Q: What are the facilities on campus like? A: The International Study Centre students get a student card that gives 24/7 access to the state-of- the-art facilities in the media faculty, including fully equipped photography and video studios, and the latest Mac computers. Students can also borrow a wide range of cameras and lenses. James McAteer Media and English teacher at Keele International Study Centre

Sometimes circumstances beyond our control mean that we cannot provide the educational services described, for example: (a) industrial action by staff or third parties (b) the unanticipated departure of key members of staff (c) power failure (d) acts of terrorism (e) damage to buildings or equipment (f) the acts of any governmental or local authority (g) where the numbers recruited to a course are so low that it is not possible to deliver an appropriate quality of education for students enrolled on it. In these circumstances, we will take all reasonable steps to disruption to those students who are affected, for example by offering students the opportunity, where reasonably possible, to move to another course, another institution or by delivering a modified version of the same course. However, to the full extent that is permitted by law, we exclude liability for any loss and/or damage suffered by any applicant or student as a result of such circumstances. You must have personal insurance It is essential that international students have the protection of personal insurance whilst in the UK. To cover you as a student at the International Study Centre, you may purchase our “Study Care” insurance cover. This policy will cover you for loss of personal possessions, travel delay, as well as providing medical insurance until the end of your International Study Centre academic programme. You can purchase Study Care Insurance as part of your application process. If you prefer not to take out Study Care insurance, you must provide proof of alternative adequate insurance cover. For more information, please visit keele.ac.uk/isc We will use all reasonable endeavours to deliver the course in accordance with the description applied to it in the prospectus (as up-dated from time to time on the website or elsewhere) for the academic year in which you begin the course. However, we reserve the right to make reasonable changes to the course (including to the content and syllabus) where developments in the subject area and/or accrediting bodies make that necessary, or to the location of the course or the method of delivery or assessment of the course in order to deliver a better quality of educational experience to students. We will aim to keep the changes to the minimum necessary to achieve the required quality of experience and will notify and consult with affected students in advance about any changes required. If we change your course and you are not satisfied with the changes, you will be offered the opportunity to withdraw from the programme and, if required, reasonable support to transfer to another provider.
