Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. Duration Of Modules:
The UCP Marjon BA modules are of 6 weeks duration each. Students
take one module at a time and upon successful completion they
can take the next.
Evaluation Of Performance
Continuous evaluation of student performance is undertaken
throughout the offering of each module. This includes evaluation of
assignments, tests and projects.
CreditTransfer
If you have successfully completed undergraduate modules, your
studies may be able to count towards the credit requirements of the
BA. If we accept the transfer of credits this will reduce the number of
modules you will need to study with UCP Marjon and allow you to
gain the BA in a shorter period of time.

*The transferability of credits is subject to UCP Marjon’s transfer credit
policies, and requires the submission of official transcripts. The official
transcripts will be evaluated to determine the credits that will officially

Academic Policies and Regulations Admission Requirements
Admission requirements for the Online BA (Hons) Business Studies
Programme include: Grades BCC (260 points) from GCE Advanced
level studies (or equivalent) in any subjects with priority given to
Business related subjects, Mathematics and Languages (General
Studies and Critical Thinking do not count towards the score).
Applicants should have a range of GCSEs (which must include a
minimum of Grade C in GCSE Mathematics and English). Other
qualifications accepted include, for example, Vocational Advanced
Subsidiary and Vocational Advanced levels, Scottish Highers,
Welsh Baccalaureate, Irish Leaving Certificates and the
International Baccalaureate.
Applications from non-standard applicants are welcomed and will be
considered individually.
Special entry requirements:
Applicants that do not have English as their first language and/or
have not received their education through the medium of English
must achieve an IELTS (or equivalent) score of 6.5 and no element
below 6.5 at the start of the programme or score placement at the
English Placement Test which can be taken online. The University
offers English modules at various levels to help students reach the
required standard for admission.
A good standard of spoken English and good inter personal skills
are a pre-requisite for all candidates.
Progression Routes
Direct entry into specific levels of the Business Studies
programmes is possible for those candidates who hold business
related BTEC, HNC and HND qualifications and wish to‘top-up’
their certificates or diplomas to a bachelor degree, provided
the learning outcomes of their BTEC award satisfy those of the
equivalent levels of the BA (Hons) programme for which they
seek admission. Direct Entry and other AP(E)L (approved prior
and experiential learning) opportunities are considered on an
individual basis. Details of such opportunities can be discussed
with an Admissions Adviser.

BUSC01 - BUSINESS ENVIRONMENT
This module will prepare students for an analytical and thorough
understanding of the local, national and international environment in
which businesses operate today. Students will gain an understanding of
the organisational goals and responsibilities of different types of businesses
operating in a range of sectors of the economy, while being able to critically
analyse and assess the global factors that influence business activities and
performance. In addition, students are taught how to apply this knowledge
to make effective decisions in complex and unpredictable contexts in a way
that enhances their employability.
BUSC02 - PRINCIPLES OF MANAGEMENT
This module provides students with the knowledge, skills, business
awareness and confidence that will enable them to succeed in the wider
business world. Students will be exposed to current management theories
and practices in the private, public, large to SME sectors and within voluntary
and community organisations. They will also have the opportunity to
improve certain intellectual, practical and transferable skills. For instance,
they will be encouraged to critically evaluate management theories with

BUSC04 - MANAGING FINANCIAL RESOURCES AND DECISIONS
The objective of this module is to give students the knowledge to
conceptually understand the sources of finance available to a business,
while providing them with a systematic understanding of the implications
of finance as a resource within a business. Upon completion of the module,
students will be able to demonstrate a confident usage of the basic terms
related to finance as a resource and also to the ways in which financial
information is presented. In addition, the module will cover the relevance
of global economic, social, regulatory and political factors affecting
the financial world, while raising awareness of ethical issues in modern
Accounting and Finance.
BUSC05 - MARKETING
This module provides students with a detailed appreciation of the principles
and importance of marketing.The course will include elements of planning,
analysis, research, price, product, place and promotion. Students will be
prepared to formulate reasoned arguments in the development of an
appropriate and sustainable marketing mix. It will help students to critically
assess the value of models used within marketing to examine customer

This module provides students with the opportunity to develop an

analysis and synthesis (identifying assumptions, using evidence to evaluate

MGTD01 - LEADERSHIP IN ORGANIZATIONS
This module provides students with in-depth analytical knowledge
and critical understanding of the styles and impact of leadership

will allow students to become effective leaders, including: how to analyse
situations that potentially need change; how to initiate, inspire and manage

MGTD02 - SMALL BUSINESS ENTREPRENEURSHIP
This module provides students with a comprehensive knowledge base
and understanding of the role and importance of small businesses and
entrepreneurship, and of the challenges of owning and managing a small
business. Students will learn how to effectively organise, manage, finance,
control, and promote a small business, as well as how to expand a business
locally, nationally and internationally. In addition, students will prepare a
feasibility analysis for a potential new venture, develop an effective business
model based on reasoned arguments, and write and present a structured
business plan.
MGTD03 - HUMAN RESOURCE MANAGEMENT
Students will be exposed to current theories and practices regarding human
resource management.They will have the opportunity to learn and practice

This module addresses the principles of quantitative methods in problem
solving and decision making. Students will develop skills in analytical and
practical decision making, being able to summarise and present data in a
professional way, including communicating effectively with non-technical

decision analysis, utility and decision making, linear programming,
including solving linear programming problems using the Graphical and

IFTD02 - SYSTEMS ANALYSIS AND DESIGN
The objective of this module to introduce students to the concepts of
a system and what it means to develop and implement an information
system in an organisation. Students will cultivate a clear understanding of
the major phases of the system development life cycle, including the ability
to identify the information and processing needs of the organisation. In
addition, students will be given the knowledge necessary to elicit, identify,
recognize and capture requirements for information systems. They will also
be able to produce a structured system specification for a simple system
from system analysis, as well as being able to clearly represent the system
analysis and design using basic diagrammatic modeling tools.
IFTD03 - DATABASE MANAGEMENT SYSTEMS
This module serves to introduce students to the critical role of databases
and database management systems in managing organisational data
and information. Students will be taught to distinguish between the
basic approaches to data modeling techniques (i.e. object-oriented data
modeling, semantic data modeling, etc.), then apply at least one conceptual
data modeling technique (such as entity-relationship modeling) to capture
the information requirements for an enterprise domain. Students will
also be taught to design high-quality relational databases, implement
a relational database design using an industrial database management
system, including the principles of data type selection and indexing. In
addition, students will be instructed on how to assess the role of databases
and database management systems in the context of enterprise systems.
IFTD04 - KNOWLEDGE MANAGEMENT
This module explains the key role of knowledge in an organisation along
with the forces driving its growth today. Students will learn to assess the
extent of the current utilization of knowledge management processes
and systems in an organisation and unveil knowledge management gaps
which need to be filled. After assessment, students will learn to identify
the various components of knowledge management solutions such as
systems, mechanisms and technologies and propose appropriate solutions
in order to meet the needs of an organisation. In addition, strong emphasis
will be placed on understanding the challenges that could be faced when
implementing knowledge management systems along with ways to
overcome them.
IFTD05 - E-COMMERCE
This module provides a comprehensive knowledge base in the concepts
related to e-commerce, including its history and various business models.
Students will cultivate the critical ability to associate what technology
is needed for specific e-commerce processes. In addition, they will gain
an understanding of marketing polices on e-commerce, along with the
evaluative skills necessary to understand what ethical, social and political
issues are involved on e-commerce applications.
IFTD06 - INTRODUCTION TO WEB DESIGN
The objective of this module is to introduce students to the very basic
ideas of Human Computer Interface, and how people perceive information.
Students will learn to adapt information for electronic media, creating
material that will visually target an audience in an efficient manner on the
Web. This module also guides students to create, code and understand a
web page and HTML code, using skill and creativity to control Web page
design. In addition, students will be well versed in the difference between
HTML versions and how to adopt new standards as they are developed.
Ultimately, lessons will lead to students publishing a website, registering a
domain and promoting the site.
IFTD07 - INFORMATION ARCHITECTURE
This module provides students with an introduction to the basic structures
of Websites and common website designs and architectures. Students will
become familiar with the concepts, fundamentals and terminology of the
art and science of Information Architecture. Skills that will be covered in this
module include: how to analyse and map existing information structures;
how to design easily navigable Information Architectures; how to explore
andapplytheuseofInformationArchitectureforcreatingefficientWebsites.
In addition, students will learn how effective web systems/Websites work
and adapt other systems and/or websites to their design and structure,
while also exploring and applying the use of Information Architecture for
creating large scale Websites.
FIND01 - FINANCIAL ACCOUNTING
This module covers a comprehensive understanding of the principles used
to prepare financial statements. Upon completion, students will be able to
demonstrate the ability to analyse and evaluate accounting matters, while
applying knowledge to prepare, compute, present, and interpret financial
statementsandtoobservetheeffectsofroutinebusinesstransactionsonthem.
In addition, students will develop key employability skills through attention to
detail, concise and accurate to data, while also being able to independently
translate transactional data into meaningful financial information.
FIND02 - FINANCIAL REPORTING
This module provides students with the knowledge to discuss and apply
both a conceptual and regulatory framework for financial reporting.
Students will be taught to prepare and present financial statements
which conform with international accounting standards. In addition,
students will learn how to analyse and interpret financial statements,
while also developing a resourceful, analytical and evaluative approach
to financial reporting. Collectively, this module will provide students with
the knowledge necessary to develop an employability skills base of current
International Financial Reporting.
FIND03 - TAXATION AND BUSINESS LAW
This module critically examines the taxation knowledge needed to address
personal and business tax affairs, providing students with the professional
knowledge to address legal tasks relating to subject areas. The module
also offers students the competency to apply theoretical taxation subject
matter to personal and business situations, enabling students to identify
assumptions and evaluate different financial circumstances to compute
taxable liabilities. The module additionally cultivates the ability to critically
apply legal methodology to resolve real life projects and issues that
individuals and businesses might encounter.
FIND04 - MANAGERIAL ACCOUNTING
This module addresses the nature, source and purpose of management
information. Topics include: applying cost accounting techniques to
business scenarios, accurately preparing budgets for planning and control,
theoretically comparing actual costs with standard costs. By course
completion, students will have developed the ability to write, communicate
and present financial information in a professional business manner to
all levels of senior management. In addition, students will develop an
employability skills base, in particular providing quality information for
decision making in complex and unpredictable business situations, along
with the ability to exercise initiative and personal responsibility.
FIND05 - CORPORATE FINANCE
This module provides students with a systematic understanding of the
financial environment and its basic financial terms. Students will be taught
how funds can be acquired in the financial markets (short-term and long-
term), how to identify criteria which corporations use to decide where
to place their investments, as well as an understanding of the role and
importance of shareholders and stakeholders of corporate organisations.
Students will be expected to comprehend the nature and relevance of ethics
in Business, as well as discuss and evaluate the relevance of global economic,
social, regulatory and political factors affecting the finance context.
FIND06 - FINANCIAL MARKETS AND INSTITUTIONS
In this module, students will systematically understand the role of money
in the economy, the main principles of the financial intermediation system
and the basics of monetary policy. In addition, students will analyse the
financial institutional framework and exhibit a conceptual understanding
of the function of financial markets, the flow of funds, and the levels of
interest rates. Upon completion, students will be able to demonstrate
awareness of ethical principles behind the functioning of financial markets
and institutions, and explain the importance of “an even playing field.”

FIND07 - INTERNATIONAL FINANCE
This module explores the conceptual understanding of basic terms
and definitions related to the operation of the foreign exchange
markets, to the international investment and financing techniques, to
the multinational banking, and to the issues of international trade. The
module will cover such concepts as: international parity relations (interest
rate parity, purchasing power parity), international financial management,
the nature and purposes of corporate financial management in the
international context, and the importance of ethical principles in global
financial strategies. Students will be able to apply mathematical skills to
solve specific problems related to foreign exchange risk exposure, interest
rate exposure, and also international investment and capital budgeting
decisions. Students are also taught the different modern techniques
which companies employ to manage and control the risks arising from
their international business exposure.

FIND08 - PERSONAL FINANCE
In addition to helping students organise and maintain personal financial
records in an appropriate manner, this module will help students develop a
conceptual understanding of the significance of personal financial planning
and basic terms related to Personal Finance. Students will become familiar
with the following topics: how to effectively manage personal assets, and
identify criteria, which individuals should use to decide where to place their
investments; how to plan and manage taxes, credit, insurance, inheritance
and retirement; how to systematically apply knowledge of financial
statements and time value of money to solve different types of problems
required for efficient personal financial planning. Finally, students will be
taught how to evaluate the recent trends in Personal Finance focusing on the
relevant ethical, social and regulatory context.
MKGD01 - SELLING SALES MANAGEMENT
This module will examine in-depth the principles of sales and selling,
including evaluation, compensation, forecasting, budgeting, and time and
territory management. Students will be taught the following skills: how to
critically evaluate sales and selling as a systematic process, how to critically
assess the value of models used within sales and selling to examine the
environment and customer behaviour.
MKGD02 - ADVERTISING
This module provides students with a comprehensive knowledge base
in the field of advertising. Topics that will be covered include: history of
advertising, the role of the advertising agency, using newspapers and
magazines, outdoor and direct response advertising, sales promotions,
research, creating copy, television and radio commercials, trademarks,
packaging, retail advertising, international advertising, and legal restraints.
Upon completion, students will be able to: formulate reasoned arguments
in the development of a marketing campaign; design an advertising
campaign following a specific process in order to develop effective
advertising programmes; and develop advertising messages including
layout and media vehicles used.
MKGD03 - CONSUMER BEHAVIOUR
This module addresses the principles of consumer behaviour, analysing
in-depth the inter-relationship between internal and external influences
on the consumer. Students will develop an understanding of peoples’
consumption-relatedbehavioursandcriticallyevaluatemarketingstrategies
intended to influence those behaviours. Topics that will be covered in this
module include: consumer needs, wants, demands; consumer research; the
influence of culture, subculture, changes and trends; social class; reference

MKGD04 - MARKETING RESEARCH
The objective of this module is to introduce students to the importance of
Marketing Research for organisations and their environment. Students will
learn to appreciate the different research methods for collecting primary
and secondary data, while also designing and undertaking a research
process on their own. Upon completion of this module, students will be able
to confidently identify problems, organise, plan and undertake fieldwork in
real world situations.
MKGD05 - INTERNATIONAL MARKETING
This module provides an introduction to the scope and challenge of
international marketing, including legal dimensions, financial decisions,
cultural dynamics, ethics and social responsibility. Students will become
familiar with such topics as: the international environment; researching
international markets; multinational market regions and market groups;
international marketing strategies; exporting, managing and logistics.
Upon completion of this module, students will understand how to critically
examine the difference between domestic and global marketing, and
identify the major methods of foreign market entry, as well as being able
to assess the value of models used within global marketing to examine
customer behaviour.
MKGD06 - STRATEGIC MARKETING
This module provides students with a comprehensive introduction into
the role of marketing in the fit of strategic business activities. Students will
cultivate the skills necessary to critically assess the role of global marketing
research in the development of global trading systems and regional
trading blocks. In addition, this module will help students compare and
contrast domestic, international and global marketing problems and
develop solutions to these problems. Topics that will be covered include:

The production of a major independent piece of study is a key element of the degree. It is the point
where knowledge and understanding acquired through the earlier taught courses is reformulated
and applied to a substantial management problem. The course is designed to enable students to
gain a deeper understanding of business theory and practice by examining how particular theories
relate to real-world situations or how particular theories offer advantage over others. Students will
use project management skills and will be required to submit a dissertation. Students will develop
investigative, analytical and communications skills and will be required to identify a set of theories by
referring to the learning outcomes of earlier modules and then to either critique an existing theory in
order to develop a better explanation of a set of phenomena, or to critique a set of competing theories
in order to say which provides a better explanation of events.

BUSH04 - CONTEMPORARY ISSUES IN MANAGEMENT
This module provides students with knowledge, skills, and business awareness that will enable them
to succeed in the wider business world. Students will be exposed to current trends in management.
They will have the opportunity to improve certain intellectual, practical and transferable skills. For
instance, they will be required to engage in critical, analytical and creative thinking to synthesize,
analyse, interpret and evaluate various sources of information. They must engage in independent
and reflective learning and communicate effectively their ideas. These aforementioned skills will
contribute to their employability and personal development.
BUSH05 - CONTEMPORARY ISSUES IN INFORMATIONTECHNOLOGY
This module provides students with in-depth knowledge on contemporary computer-based
technologies being used by different types of people for different applications. Students will have
the opportunity to analyse and understand the implications of IT in creating new concepts for human
communities (virtual communities) and human inter-relationships (impersonal relationships). They
will also cultivate the skills necessary to critically evaluate, use and discuss citations from different
high quality academic sources, while also being able to discuss the future of technology in terms of
impact in research and human life.
BUSH06 - CONTEMPORARY ISSUES IN MARKETING
This module provides students with a comprehensive understanding of complex contemporary
issues relating to marketing. Students will be exposed to the changing nature and status of marketing
with regards to integrated marketing communications, electronic marketing, global marketing and
relationship marketing. In addition, students will be taught to critically evaluate the relevance of
ethical marketing in implementing marketing management decisions in organisations.
BUSH07 - CONTEMPORARY ISSUES IN FINANCE
This module introduces students to the cognitive skills relevant to the study and research of
recent issues in finance. Students will learn to analyse the contemporary issues in finance, name
the factors that led to the global crisis, and discuss corrective and/or preventative measures and
their implementation. In addition, students will gain a deeper understanding of the impact of the
international debt crisis on businesses and individuals, while being able to identify and evaluate key
economic, social and political factors influencing and/or shaping financial regulation and auditing
standards in the post-crisis environment. Students will also cultivate an understanding of the role of
social and environmental sustainability issues within processes of corporate accountability, as well
as the impact of creative accounting and corporate fraud on financial reporting. Finally, students
will have the opportunity for personal development through self-management, resourcefulness and
professional attitude.

ACCC01 - ACCOUNTING
Learners will gain a fundamental knowledge and understanding of the
principles and concepts relating to financial accounting and technical pro-
ficiency in the use of double entry accounting techniques and preparation
of financial statements.
ACCC02 - MANAGEMENT
This module provides students with the knowledge, skills, business

The aim of this module is to provide the students with an overview of the
UK tax system. Students will be introduced to the main U.K. taxes. Students

to take remedial action. Apply budgeting techniques and evaluate alterna-
tive methods of budgeting, planning and control.
Students will gain ability to identify and measure information which is
relevant for different types of business decisions.
ACCD03 - AUDITING AND ASSURANCE
This module is designed to assist students to exercise judgment and
apply techniques in the analysis of matters relating to the provision of
audit and assurance services. More specifically upon completion of the
course students will be able to demonstrate their ability to work within a
professional and ethical framework, understand current issues and devel-
opments relating to auditing and the provision of audit-related and assur-
ance services, explain and evaluate the auditor s position in relation to the
acceptance and retention of professional appointments, and evaluate and
recommend quality control policies and procedures.
ACCD04 - FINANCIAL REPORTING
This module develops techniques used in preparing financial statements
and to develop a knowledge and understanding of more advanced finan-
cial accounting concepts and principles in accordance with Accounting
Standards.
ACCD05 - BUSINESS STRATEGY AND POLICY
This module exposes students to key strategy concepts that are used
in planning and managing of strategic business activities. Students will
understand and apply these concepts to relevant business scenarios.
ACCD06 - MANAGERIAL FINANCE
This module provides an overview of the key finance principles, how finan-
cial markets operate and how security prices are determined. Students will
