School-based users, both students and educators, have always been a primary target audience for museum on-line content. Museums and other cultural organisations have made significant investments in developing and disseminating content on-line to reach and engage these users. Yet despite the obvious logic of this connection, in practice it has proven difficult to build effective permanent bridges between the wealth of museum digital content and the classroom environment. While many individual institutions host outstanding educational content on their individual Web sites, this material may remain inaccessible or under utilised in a classroom environment due to technology and security constraints, or simply through lack of awareness or discoverability. We are yet to develop effective and sustainable supply chains of museum digital content from multiple institutions for use in classroom environments. In Australia and Canada two new national approaches to solving the supply chain problem have been developed by two agencies working with museum organisations to facilitate the flow of content into classroom environments. This paper examines the imperatives driving these initiatives and the lessons learned in creating an integrated national approach to developing digital supply chains for school-based users of museum content.

Old wine in new bottles? Exploring MOOCs
On 9 December 2013 we were very pleased to be able to welcome Professor Asha Kanwar (President & CEO of the Commonwealth of Learning) to Senate House to conduct a free lunchtime seminar “Old wine in new bottles? Exploring MOOCs”.
The special session was chaired by Professor Alan Tait (Open University, CDE Visiting Fellow), and was an opportunity to engage with one of the world’s leading advocates of learning for development.
MOOCs seem to be a natural progression in the different stages of the development of distance education. Starting with external degrees, correspondence courses, open and distance learning, and more recently OER, MOOCs are yet another phase of opening up access to education. But will MOOCs really make a difference to democratizing education? Will they transform pedagogy and positively impact learning outcomes? How will they negotiate the digital divide? Or are MOOCs simply old wine in new bottles? This presentation will address these questions and explore the ways in which MOOCs can play a positive role in transforming education.
Digital Open Textbooks for Development
1. The Digital Open Textbooks for Development (DOT4D) initiative at the University of Cape Town aims to improve equitable access to learning resources through open textbooks.
2. Open textbooks are digital collections of teaching content published openly online to be accessible on any device. The DOT4D initiative contributes to social justice in South African higher education.
3. Textbook costs and lack of representation create injustices in South Africa. The DOT4D initiative supports open textbook authors through grants to make textbooks more local, multilingual, and developed with student input.
EDU On-demand for Gen z
