Editor's Notes

  • #2 Welcome to the webinar and pleasure to be online with you and talk about this topic. Background It is often a challenging conversation to have with business leaders. How can you best tell your execs about the value that Evergreen IT can provide and get them interested in what it means to them? So today, we’re going to be looking at how you can sell Evergreen IT to your organisation
  • #3 [Dave] Today, we’re going to look are Windows Servicing. We’ll give you an overview of what it’s all about and update you on changes over the last few months. We’ll then be looking at how it affects your organization. It’s time to start thinking of managing Windows upgrades as a process rather than a project. Barry will be exploring different deployment strategies and identifying skills that are going to be required to support the cultural change to managing Windows going forward.
  • #4 Think if you were the executive. What do you care about? In our case about the business outcomes of the IT service. We wouldn’t want to walk into a car showroom and be told what we need. Do you know what business value you currently bring to your CEO. Key Issues:
  • #5 Think if you were the executive. What do you care about? In our case about the business outcomes of the IT service. We wouldn’t want to walk into a car showroom and be told what we need. Do you know what business value you currently bring to your CEO. Key Issues: We need to tell a story – how do we tell the right one? How do we map that story to something that the business values … it is not about what we do … it is about the perception of the impact of what we do How can Evergreen IT be relevant to the business agenda - How can we make this story even more compelling
  • #7 [BARRY] You will hear two phrases from Microsoft in the coming months. One is ‘Get Current, Stay Current’ – aimed at those companies that are on the path to Windows 10. The other is for those already migrated, or some way through their rollouts which is ‘It’s a Process, Not A Project”. By this, they are referring to the frequent updates to the operating system that organisations like yours must adhere to in order to keep current and secure. In my experience, any process with a deadline is actually a project, but we’ll worry about terminology later!
  • #8 The Challenges of your Digital Workspace in 2019 End User Expectations continually rise and tolerance continually reduces Technology Lifecycles (hardware, applications, OS, Cloud) accelerate Suppliers proliferate (despite Procurement desires) Upgrade/Refresh periods constantly reduce (SAAS, DevOps) Licensing challenging and audit risk pervasive Budgets and Headcount reduce Automation is a mandatory
  • #9 Change the way that we think about value to tell this Evergreen IT story Not about features. We need to understand their view. What are the business consuming at the macro level and the outcomes we are facilitating. The current state of the world is: No more transformation and revolution, just evolutions Project budgets are a thing of the past, everything is now a process IT departments focussed on end-user experience and industrialization
  • #11 The Windows 10 support timeline has settled now into a common model. 30 months for the 09 releases and 18 months for the 03 releases. This means that most companies will adopt a 12 month rollout cycle for each 09 release and skip the 03 releases. So every 12 months, you will be managing a full upgrade project across your Windows 10 estate. If you don’t do this, you risk the situation in red. This shows how, very quickly, you could be supporting multiple build images, applications across multiple OS versions and increasing complexity and workload. In this example, a customer adopted the 1709 release, and within an 18 month rollout period could now be supporting 5 different OS releases if not managed correctly.
  • #14 [BARRY] You will hear two phrases from Microsoft in the coming months. One is ‘Get Current, Stay Current’ – aimed at those companies that are on the path to Windows 10. The other is for those already migrated, or some way through their rollouts which is ‘It’s a Process, Not A Project”. In my experience, any process with a deadline is actually a project, but we’ll worry about terminology later!
  • #15 Bringing Control and Efficiency to your end users while giving them Autonomy Continual Complete Visibility of the whole digital environment What do you have? Who do you have? What should they have? One Place for all End User Affecting Projects Multi-Dimensional Planning and control to account for People: Individuals, Groups, Locations Applications: Web, OS …. Technology: Cloud, device Automation and Self-Service Optimisation Capabilities: Parallel and Interacting Projects Planning Scheduling Communications Reporting
  • #17 To end, we wanted to consider some things that you can do now to position yourselves for Evergreen IT. These are by no means all you can do, but we think they are a good starting point. Number one is to get culturally ready for it. Make sure everyone in your organisation knows what is about to hit them in terms of the new model impact. Secondly, start defining your ‘perfect’ deployment strategy. It might be a theoretical exercise, but it will help you understand what is going to be involved. The third item is to think about setting up a function to manage the as a service model. Of course we are just looking at Windows 10, but you will also have Office 365 and SCCM to contend with, so a dedicated function might be a good idea for most organisations. Next, make sure you have documented your end to end process and workflow for managing the upgrades. What should happen and when? How are you going to communicate with your end users, manage app testing, manage scheduling and the like? Finally, you really should start to consider whether your existing tooling is sufficient to manage this process repeatably. Of course we would love you to look into Juriba Dashworks for the planning and readiness control, and into the Windows 10 servicing suite from 1E. Both tools would help you better plan, manage and execute the deployments in a much more automated fashion than you might be used to. So with that, I’ll hand back to Dave to wrap up and go to the questions…
  • #18 [Dave] Thanks Barry. Before we get into the questions, I just wanted to highlight some further content we have on the Juriba and 1E web sites. com, which both include , a library of webinar recordings and case studies on 1E Shopping and AppClarity that we mentioned in today’s webinar.
