This document summarizes trends in Latin American agricultural extension systems and FAO's experiences in the region. Key trends include the reemergence of the state, a focus on social inclusion, food security, and rural development. Emerging agendas across Latin American countries include family farming programs, public purchases, registries, social security programs, productive coupons programs, and extension and innovation initiatives. There is also a trend toward pluralism in extension with independent extension workers, competitive funds, producer cooperatives, value chain approaches, and participatory extension models.
