After World War II, Korea was divided along the 38th parallel, with the Soviet Union occupying the north and the United States occupying the south. Tensions rose between the two sides, leading North Korea to launch an invasion of South Korea on June 25, 1950, starting the Korean War. The war lasted three years with heavy fighting and casualties on both sides. An armistice was signed in 1953, though no peace treaty was signed, so the two Koreas remain technically at war. The conflict involved troops and support from 21 countries led by the United States and Britain against North Korean and Chinese forces. Hundreds of thousands of soldiers and civilians were killed during the war.
