Change is the only constant in the work environment
Whether you are shifting office to another location, adopting a new practice or process, implementing an IT system, or re-engineering the business processes for an organization, change happens to everyone all the time.
However, many change initiatives have been short-lived as a result of the failure to manage and sustain the change.
For change to be successful and enduring, do take note of the key factors impacting change below:
1. Commitment from the top
To manage a change initiative, e.g. Lean transformation, there has to be constant commitment from the top management.
Conduct regular management reviews of the change implementation progress versus the plan to ensure that the roadmap and scope of change is well-defined, timelines or key milestones are adhered to, and resources such as people, time and money are put in place where they are needed.
2. Future state vision
Define and rally around a compelling vision for the future state. What are the potential threats? How urgent is the change? What are the risks if the organization does not change? How will you know when we get there?
Present the facts and findings such as flat earnings, rising costs, decreasing market share, and other relevant key indicators where necessary to create awareness and convince employees to buy-in to the change initiative.
Identify the key resistance issues and stakeholders who are impacted by the change and address them. Be prepared to deal with emotional and political issues.
Create a compelling vision and an urgency for change so as to move people out from their comfort zones to a change in behavior and the way they value-add to the business and customers.

This talk explores the possibilities of applying machine learning in developing predictive models of academic performance. What factors lead to success at university? Are there differences between students of different generations? Answers are given by applying machine learning algorithms to a data set of 400 students of three generations of IT studies. The results show differences between students with regard to student responsibility and regularity of class attendance and great potential of applying machine learning in developing predictive models.

Despite the growing impact of bioinformatics in the biological science community, integration of an on-site bioinformatics curriculum is cost prohibitive for many universities due to the necessary infrastructure and computational resources. Furthermore, many programs prioritize the technical aspects of bioinformatics over the biological concepts and logic of analyses, thus limiting the emphasis on critical thinking, problem solving, and in-depth inquiry. To address the gap in bioinformatics education and train students to approach complex biomedical problems, we present a new model for curriculum development that combines our unique online learning environment with traditional pedagogical approaches delivered through academic partnerships. The T-BioInfo platform (https://t-bio.info) allows users to combine computational analysis modules into pipelines to develop solutions for ‘omics data and machine learning problems. State-of-the-art tools for analysis, integration, and visualization of data are offered through a user-friendly interface. In parallel, online educational modules provide a theoretical framework for the analysis methods and experimental techniques. This model for bioinformatics training was implemented at Loyola University New Orleans, a liberal arts institution, for the first time in January 2018. Twelve undergraduate students and five faculty members participated in a new one-semester bioinformatics course. After completing a core set of online modules and pipelines, students conducted team research projects on topics such as patient derived xenograft (PDX) models, immune responses in cancer, and precision medicine. Gains in critical thinking and problem-solving skills were observed and participants were enthusiastic about engaging in bioinformatics research. In conclusion, our collaborative model for bioinformatics education combines best-practices in online and in-class learning with a powerful computational platform. This model could be implemented in undergraduate and graduate curricula to enhance research, build partnerships with industry, and strengthen the scientific workforce.

Dear Dr. Kornbluth and Mr. Gorenberg,
The US House of Representatives is deeply concerned by ongoing and pervasive acts of antisemitic
harassment and intimidation at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Failing to act decisively to ensure a safe learning environment for all students would be a grave dereliction of your responsibilities as President of MIT and Chair of the MIT Corporation.
This Congress will not stand idly by and allow an environment hostile to Jewish students to persist. The House believes that your institution is in violation of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, and the inability or
unwillingness to rectify this violation through action requires accountability.
Postsecondary education is a unique opportunity for students to learn and have their ideas and beliefs challenged. However, universities receiving hundreds of millions of federal funds annually have denied
students that opportunity and have been hijacked to become venues for the promotion of terrorism, antisemitic harassment and intimidation, unlawful encampments, and in some cases, assaults and riots.
The House of Representatives will not countenance the use of federal funds to indoctrinate students into hateful, antisemitic, anti-American supporters of terrorism. Investigations into campus antisemitism by the Committee on Education and the Workforce and the Committee on Ways and Means have been expanded into a Congress-wide probe across all relevant jurisdictions to address this national crisis. The undersigned Committees will conduct oversight into the use of federal funds at MIT and its learning environment under authorities granted to each Committee.
• The Committee on Education and the Workforce has been investigating your institution since December 7, 2023. The Committee has broad jurisdiction over postsecondary education, including its compliance with Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, campus safety concerns over disruptions to the learning environment, and the awarding of federal student aid under the Higher Education Act.
• The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is investigating the sources of funding and other support flowing to groups espousing pro-Hamas propaganda and engaged in antisemitic harassment and intimidation of students. Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.
