and/or customer’s)
• Determine waste streams and
their volume…
‒ Cuttings
‒ Drilling fluid
‒ Waste water
• Rig Audit
• Define management controls
‒ Based upon ISO9000, and
ISO14001 principles
‒ Reporting and operation
procedure
‒ Performance criteria (e.g.
cost/bbl, cost/ft)

• After drying, cuttings can be:
• Encapsulated and buried (solidification)
• Used for road and location base (can be encapsulated for this as
well)
• Injected into suitable formation (CRI)
• Land-farmed, if salt content allows
• Mixed with cement and made into artificial reef structures (Reef
Balls)
Cuttings Disposal Options

Pit Solidification
• Cuttings are encapsulated in cement to prevent the leaching of salt
and other contaminants into the soil.
• Encapsulation cells are lined with 6” of neat cement, then
cuttings are added. Cuttings and cement are mixed to 15-20%/volume
in Pug Mill and added to cell.
• Testing normally follows the LSO 29-b regulations on Disposal of Non-
Hazardous Waste.
Results
• Almost all wastes can be disposed of in this manner
• On or near-site option for treatment and disposal of drilling waste.
• Can be a relatively inexpensive process.
