This study was a double-blind randomized clinical trial that compared partial fundoplication (PF) to total fundoplication (TF) in patients undergoing laparoscopic antireflux surgery. The study randomized 456 patients to receive either a 270-degree posterior PF or a 360-degree Nissen TF. Both procedures effectively controlled acid reflux and GERD symptoms as measured by pH monitoring and quality of life assessments. However, dysphagia scores were significantly lower with PF after 1 and 2 years, suggesting PF may be preferable to TF for surgical treatment of GERD.
