MIS knee replacement can provide functional benefits such as faster rehabilitation, shorter hospital stays, and improved range of motion compared to traditional knee replacement. However, MIS knee replacement also has risks such as inferior component placement and revision surgery that may be higher in the initial learning curve as the surgeon gains experience with the technique. The benefits of MIS must be weighed against the potential risks.

  1. Mr. Chairman ladies and gentlemen. My thanks to Derek Van Deurzen and the organising committee for inviting me. I was going to talk again on patellar replacement following TKA as I did 10 years ago but MIS was thought to be a more controversial topic. I will try to stay closely to the title I was given which will mean some reference slides and fewer pretty pictures. To me the title I was given asks three questions: what is a suitable, appropriate accurate and verifiable measure of knee function following knee replacement? and What is MIS TKA and how should it be done? Are there any benefits from using MIS for the functional results of the patient.
