John Morton is considered New Zealand's greatest marine biologist. In his late 70s, Morton created the Goat Island marine reserve, also known as Whakatuwhenua, in the early 1960s to 1971. Morton's family lives in Morrisville but travels to Milford for summer holidays, and Morton was known for his curiosity and for sharing his discoveries, such as the salmon he caught in one photo.
