Q2: How does your media product
represent particular social groups?
Social groups represented in our film
               opening .
The social groups that are represented in our
film opening are:
• the white teen middle class playing the
   protagonist .
• the white teen working class playing the
   antagonist.
Females were deliberately left out to avoid the
cliché of a white teen female victim; Such as The
Hills Have Eyes.
Class Representation
• The middle class white male is represented as
  innocent and ‘well-to-do’, reinforcing the
  social construct of this being the media
  stereotype of success.

• The working class male is represented as a
  media caricature and overall the ‘bad-guy’. A
  media construct strengthened since the 2011
  riots.
Reinforcing Representation
Mis en scene

The use of an expensive coat and well-fitted
clothing along with a well-constructed set
design, with well-lit bedroom and clean
bathroom; reinforce the representation of a
relatively wealthy individual.
Reinforcing Representation
• Whereas the killer is represented as lower
  class through his clothing such as the tracksuit
  that he is wearing which strengthens the
  image of teen through the brand Ralph
  Lauren.
• The set design also connotes poverty to
  strengthen an image of a underclass through
  dimly lit surroundings and candle's lighting the
  rooms.
Reinforcing Representation
• Non verbal language
The Antagonist is shown as confident in his walk when in
his run down area yet as soon as he comes into the
middle class environment puts his head down and looks
uncomfortable this is visa versa with the Protagonist who
walks with a very good posture and is very confident
around the comforts that he knows but when taken into
the working class enviroment feels uncomfortable this
represents the lack of knowledge the two classes have of
each other in contrast to the image they have of one
another.
Reinforcing Representation
Sound: There is little digetic sound so there is
little impact to the representation of social
groups. However, the non-digetic sounds, i.e.
the soundtrack with it’s eerie quality and
strongly bassy beat is reminicient of many teen-
horror soundtracks.
Macro Issues
Reinforcing ideologies:
Our film opening reinforces the western, typically
northern hemisphere, ideology of a wide gulf
between the social classes. It underpins the macro
theory that it is the poor or society’s under-class
who are more likely to commit crime.
Our film opening plays to this as we portray the
Working-Class as crimminals through the mis en
scene

Class Representation • The middle class white male is represented as innocent and ‘well-to-do’, reinforcing the social construct of this being the media stereotype of success. • The working class male is represented as a media caricature and overall the ‘bad-guy’. A media construct strengthened since the 2011 riots.
  • 4. Reinforcing Representation Mis en scene The use of an expensive coat and well-fitted clothing along with a well-constructed set design, with well-lit bedroom and clean bathroom; reinforce the representation of a relatively wealthy individual.
