Q1
1. Q1:In what way does your media
product use, develop or
challenge forms and conventions
of real media production?
2. • To help us create our film opening we
studied other films such as scream
,Jamaica inn and jaws to enhance our
understanding of the conventions of horror
and many aspects of these films are
present in our film opening.
3. Secondary research Film opening
•The film scream 4 (Craven 2011) gave us the
Scream 4 (Craven,2011) idea of the set deign ,in most horror films the
action takes place inside a family home and that
is where our film opening takes place showing
that the set design of our film opening does
conform to the horror genre.
•Another idea that is mirrored in our film opening
is the use of a telephone this is iconic of most
modern day horrors especially when involving
teen protagonist and as we made a teen horror
we thought this suited our film opening very well.
•In our opening we used a male protagonist
,unlike in many teen horrors this did not conform
to the genre horror which is why we used a male
as we thought it made the opening more original
and individual.

•I looked at Jamaica inn as I thought It was
Jamaica inn an interesting contrast to all the modern
(Hitchcock,1939) horrors seen, The narrative especially
unlike most modern horrors is one of ‘love’
in the broadest sense of the word or lust.
We incorporated this theme through our
narrative by having the antagonist ‘needing
‘ this other human ,this does not readily
conform to horror as we know it now but in
the past this was a key theme in the horror
genre.

•The lighting used in the opening is low-
The grudge key which makes the attic seem smaller
(shimizu,2004) and gives the effect of an inescapable
atmosphere ,This convention we picked
up on and used in the cellar by having
the only light from candles creating an
area that seemed smaller with dark
corners which gave the impression that
you could ‘lurk’ in the corners.
•The narrative of ‘the grudge’ reinforces
the fact that our narrative follows the
conventions of horror as there is a
antagonist already inside the house who
dwells in a small dark space where its
unsafe to go but somehow the victim
always ends up there whether it be they
are taken there or go there to investigate
something.

Amityville horror .The weapon wielded by the antagonist in
the opening sequence is in my opinion
(Douglas 2005) unconventional of horror ,what makes the
horror in the film is who he kills eg. His
family this was interesting however we felt
that a more traditional approach of a
weapon which the killer has to physically
put effort in too use creates more of a
sense of horror as you are aware of the
capabilities of the character and gives
some perspective of the lengths they are
prepared to go to achieve their goals. This
lead us to use the wooden pole as it
connotes the sense of youth and maybe
inexperience as its hard to get hold of a
knife or gun at a young age which further
enforces the idea of our teen horror genre.
