Rural women in the regions
Rural women in certain regions face shared challenges including less employment opportunities, lower pay, and less freedom and prospects for development compared to men. They have less access to loans and education and undertake more unpaid domestic work. Rural women are also underrepresented in local decision-making roles. However, some strategies that can help rural women gain more influence include networking with women's groups, addressing local authorities and politicians, and emphasizing their potential contributions to development. While change has started recently, rural women have begun making their voices heard on important issues over the last 20-25 years.

WalkTalks is an engagement tool created by Ryan Martinson of Sustainable Calgary to promote community connections through walking. It focuses discussions on factors that influence community attachment like social offerings, openness, and aesthetics. WalkTalks events encourage participants to brainstorm positive solutions to break down barriers to walking in their community. By shifting conversations to community possibilities and citizen engagement, WalkTalks aims to transform isolation into connectedness and care for the whole community.
The Good Life
Carlos Motta's artwork "The Good Life" consists of an Internet archive, a video installation, and commissioned texts. The Internet archive allows public access to videos from anywhere without signing up. The installation displays 12 monitors in an arrangement referencing the Athenian agora, where citizens participated in politics. It includes over 360 video interviews from 12 Latin American cities examining democratization and US intervention from 2005-2008. People from various occupations aged 15 to over 70 were interviewed to showcase diverse opinions. The artwork aims to present politics to various people in an accessible form by connecting individual and American policies through people's perspectives.
Media literacy 2

Anne Markusen - How Do We Know Creative Placemaking is Working?
Ann Markusen is Director of the Arts Economy Initiative and the Project on Regional and Industrial Economics at the University of Minnesota’s Humphrey School of Public Affairs, and Principal of Markusen Economic Research. She is a researcher, frequent public speaker, and advisor to public agencies, policymakers, businesses, economic developers, and nonprofit organizations across the US, in Europe, Japan, Korea, Australia and Brazil. Her expertise is in economic development at the state and local level, where she brings analytical skills to bear on the ways that industries and occupations shape possibilities for creating good work. Markusen is currently serving as research and writing consultant for the Minnesota House of Representatives’ Select Committee on Living Wage Jobs.
Markusen’s research and policy work has also been directly toward pressing economic development issues at national and local scales, including business tax incentives (Reining in the Competition for Capital, 2007), minimum wage legislation, military industrial conversion (Arming the Future: a Defense Industry for the 20th Century, 1999; Dismantling the Cold War Economy, 1992; The Rise of the Gunbelt, 1991) high tech job growth (High Tech America 1985), energy boomtowns, and state/local public finance. Over the years, her op eds have been published in the New York Times, Los Angeles Times, Chicago Tribune, Christian Science Monitor and many regional dallies, and she has been a frequent radio and television commentator.

RCM annually selects a theme and organizational partners for a capstone event. It facilitates social networking groups for community involvement in projects and works of art or music to be shared at the event. The best works will be made available for public purchase. As an example, RCM partners with the Toronto International Film Festival, organizing groups to create paintings and performances inspired by films for moviegoers to see. Broadening activities beyond music to other arts involves more communities. Partnering with other arts organizations strengthens the arts community while reducing competition, and builds RCM's brand and donor base by connecting diverse people to Canada. RCM affiliation provides credibility to the social networking groups.

Cultural planning is a community-wide process that involves assessing local cultural resources and needs, setting goals for cultural development, and implementing plans to address needs and opportunities. It is done through a structured, consensus-building process that brings together representatives from the arts community, political leaders, and citizens. Cultural planning aims to strengthen support for the arts, integrate arts into education, tap the economic potential of arts and culture, and enhance civic pride. Some benefits of cultural planning include increased funding, cooperation among arts groups, fuller integration of arts into the community, and improved access to cultural programs.

Citizen Power Peterborough was a 3-year project in Peterborough, UK that aimed to increase civic engagement and citizen empowerment. It partnered local residents, Peterborough City Council, and Arts Council England to cultivate participation, community attachment, and innovation through citizen-led initiatives. Over 1,497 local residents actively participated in efforts to improve civic involvement and place-making. The project sought to address challenges of mobilizing community assets and reframing public services around citizen empowerment rather than bureaucratic control. It explored new ways to unlock citizen power and make civic participation more inclusive and representative.

This work package will explore how cultural intermediation connects communities to the creative economy through case studies in Birmingham and Manchester. It aims to understand how intermediation impacts communities and what cultural learning is facilitated. The research will use ethnography including interviews and events to examine how formal cultural intermediation has engaged hard-to-reach communities and supported their involvement in the creative economy. Local community researchers will be trained to help co-create knowledge and benefit from skills development. Planned outputs include academic publications, case studies, engagement guides and events, and online dissemination of lessons learned.

the notion of the public sphere is at the center of participatory approaches to democracy. the public sphere is the arena where citizens come together, exchange opinions regarding public affairs, discuss, deliberate, and eventually form public opinion. This arena can be a specific place where citizens gather (for example,
a town hall meeting), but it can also be a communication infrastructure through which citizens send and receive information and opinions. the public sphere is a central aspect of good governance. Without a func- tioning and democratic public sphere, government officials cannot be held accountable for their actions, and citizens will not be able to assert any influence over political decisions.

Susan Oman presents paradata from her nationwide focus groups on well-being. These data suggest that everyday conversations offer the same well-being effects as more formal participation methods, and by extension indicate that research and evaluations which assume the social effects of certain forms of cultural participation are currently overreaching in their claims.
