Badges at the formal/informal interface: badge use, functioning and learners ...Simon Cross
This presentation delivered on 17 December 2013 at the Open University E-Learning Community Event reported on the learners use of and attitudes towards badges in two ‘massive’ open online courses delivered by the Open University in 2013; one as part of JISC funded research project and the other as part of a taught postgraduate course. It will review the range of functions that badges can serve including consideration of psychological, sociological, cultural and reputational functions and using this to make a distinction between possible formative and summative roles. Data from end of courses surveys and user posts on the course site and social media will be used to examine what value participants ascribed to badges. Whilst the majority of respondents felt the opportunity to earn badges contributed positively to the course, some remained sceptical or concerned about their role and impact.

“Open badges for digital skills: Opportunities and Challenges” By Julie Adams, Academic Skills Tutor (IT), Information Services
Session outline: This session will look at some of the opportunities offered by open badges to recognise skills and competencies both inside and outside the curriculum, as well as some of the challenges to overcome when considering their adoption. It will explain how the Academic Skills Know-how team at Staffordshire University are planning on extending their use of open badges to recognise students’ digital literacy skills. Some of the tools available to ensure badges are well designed and credible will be outlined.
Digital badges for learning are emerging technologies that have exciting possibilities for libraries, particularly in the area of Information Literacy instruction. They are collectible icons that can only be achieved based on a set of predetermined learning competencies. Benefits of Digital Badges: ideal for tracking and providing incentives for Information Literacy learning; can be earned both as an extracurricular activity and through a Learning Management System as part of coursework tied to packets of learning outcomes; provides flexibility that suits both library instruction programs that are integrated, stand-alone, and independent to the curriculum.

Open Badges are gaining acceptance as eCredentials by educators, professional bodies and employers around the world because they enable better ways to map, recognize and share learning, including informal learning. Quality Open Badges are trustable tokens of skills and achievements that can be shared in e-portfolios, talent pipelines and social media. Open Badges are modular and “stackable”: they can be linked together into flexible development pathways and can support Competency Based Education and learning transfer.

A grassroots movement has led to Student Digital Leadership initiatives operating in a number of UK schools, both at primary and secondary level. Until now there has been no mechanism to provide transferable recognition for the skills and achievements that students acquire in these roles. Mozilla's Open Badges technology offers an opportunity for addressing this, whereby students are able to collect badges for the roles they take on and display them on selected websites - for example, social networking profiles, job sites, online CVs and more ..
The session will describe how the SDL initiative is operating in schools, including the roles that students typically take on, and the design and development of the badging framework that helps define each badge/role.

June 3, 2024 Anti-Semitism Letter Sent to MIT President Kornbluth and MIT Cor...Levi Shapiro
Letter from the Congress of the United States regarding Anti-Semitism sent June 3rd to MIT President Sally Kornbluth, MIT Corp Chair, Mark Gorenberg
Dear Dr. Kornbluth and Mr. Gorenberg,
The US House of Representatives is deeply concerned by ongoing and pervasive acts of antisemitic
harassment and intimidation at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Failing to act decisively to ensure a safe learning environment for all students would be a grave dereliction of your responsibilities as President of MIT and Chair of the MIT Corporation.
This Congress will not stand idly by and allow an environment hostile to Jewish students to persist. The House believes that your institution is in violation of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, and the inability or
unwillingness to rectify this violation through action requires accountability.
Postsecondary education is a unique opportunity for students to learn and have their ideas and beliefs challenged. However, universities receiving hundreds of millions of federal funds annually have denied
students that opportunity and have been hijacked to become venues for the promotion of terrorism, antisemitic harassment and intimidation, unlawful encampments, and in some cases, assaults and riots.
The House of Representatives will not countenance the use of federal funds to indoctrinate students into hateful, antisemitic, anti-American supporters of terrorism. Investigations into campus antisemitism by the Committee on Education and the Workforce and the Committee on Ways and Means have been expanded into a Congress-wide probe across all relevant jurisdictions to address this national crisis. The undersigned Committees will conduct oversight into the use of federal funds at MIT and its learning environment under authorities granted to each Committee.
• The Committee on Education and the Workforce has been investigating your institution since December 7, 2023. The Committee has broad jurisdiction over postsecondary education, including its compliance with Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, campus safety concerns over disruptions to the learning environment, and the awarding of federal student aid under the Higher Education Act.
• The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is investigating the sources of funding and other support flowing to groups espousing pro-Hamas propaganda and engaged in antisemitic harassment and intimidation of students. The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is the principal oversight committee of the US House of Representatives and has broad authority to investigate “any matter” at “any time” under House Rule X.
• The Committee on Ways and Means has been investigating several universities since November 15, 2023, when the Committee held a hearing entitled From Ivory Towers to Dark Corners: Investigating the Nexus Between Antisemitism, Tax-Exempt Universities, and Terror Financing. The Committee followed the hearing with letters to those institutions on January 10, 202

5. Why 'Open' badges?
•
Badges increasingly being used to encourage continued
'brand engagement' online
– e.g. Four Square, Quidco,
•
Also used to represent achievement within a domain
– e.g games (XBox, Playstation, Steam [PC])
•
However, all separate
•
'Open Badges' allows badges from multiple sources to be

6. Why the buzz about Open Badges for
Education?
•
Growing recognition that lots of learning happens outside
the classroom
•
Grade transcripts hide the 'truth' about learning
•
Strong links with current trends such as MOOCs,
Gamification, Mobile Learning
– but can be used independently of these
•
Significant motivational potential in some situations

7. "What's my motivation?"
•
Intrinsic Motivation
- Personal
- Strong
• Extrinsic Motivation
- External factors
- Weak (usually)
• Mixed motivations
common
- e.g. interested in the topic,
but also want to gain
recognition from peers.

9. Findings related to student motivation
•
Badges would act as a motivator
–
–
•
would push students to go beyond the minimum
would support both individual and competitive goals
Why?
– To stand out when apply for jobs
– To help students monitor their progress
• personal and relative to peers
– To recognise effort in formative tasks
•
But, important not to issue too many
– each badge must represent a genuine achievement
