Objective
A senior technical position where knowledge, skills, and hard work can contribute to the creation of world-
class products that make life simpler, safer, and more enjoyable for millions of users. Particularly interested
in challenging assignments where good people skills, good technical skills, good troubleshooting skills, and
an inventive, mind lead to solid solutions to difficult problems.
Experience
HP (May 2010 to Present)
Senior Architect for Platform Security
Strategic responsibility for all security-related hardware and software shipping on HP’s notebook, desktop,
and tablet business systems.
Conceived, implemented and oversaw the HP PC business unit’s secure software development process
(SSDL). Over time, SSDL became the primary security assurance process for all FW and SW development
in both the PC and Printer businesses at HP.
Oversaw review and selection of TPM and fingerprint readers – including creation and analysis of
RFQs. Architected HP business PC security strategy – including the HP Client Security and HP
ProtectTools suites.
Acted as primary subject matter expert on security for multiple business units throughout HP.
Used on multiple occasions to provide urgent troubleshooting to resolve security-related show-stoppers
on projects all over the globe. Trusted to provide solid security resolutions anywhere and at any time.
Provided dozens of security-related briefings to customers each year. Normally involved one-to-three
hour briefings to C-level executives from our largest existing or prospective customers. Also routinely
briefed senior security representatives from government agencies in the US, and elsewhere.
Maintained an updated awareness of the latest cryptographic methods and issues, both theoretical and
as used in practical implementations.
Earned a reputation for the skilled translation of esoteric security concepts into terms easily understood
by marketing, management, and developers.
Trained all staff in security requirement definition, secure design, threat modeling, and secure coding.
Created video-based training for new hires and for refresher training. Also trained numerous vendors
on these skills to ensure supply chain conformity with SSDL.
Filed over a dozen patents to date.
AuthenTec, Inc. (August 1999 to May 2010)
Security and PC Software Architect (July 2004 to May 2010)
Responsible for the system level architecture of all security related HW and SW used in AuthenTec
biometric solutions. Also responsible for architecture design for all software running on Windows-based
PCs. The sensor technology I helped invent is now owned and used by Apple in iPhones.
Required analysis, design, and coding in the C, C++, and C# languages within an agile development
process based on SCRUM.
2. JAMES R. WALDRON Page 2
Responsible for training and mentoring all software engineers in Melbourne, FL office. Also recruited,
trained and continued to mentor software engineers in the Shanghai office.
Required solid understanding of encryption algorithms, key management approaches, trust models,
threat analysis, and security protocol design.
Designed all internal interfaces and external API function calls for the AuthenTec fingerprint security
system software, including pre-boot authentication for legacy and UEFI BIOS security, Full Disk
Encryption, Active Directory Management (ADM), Gina, CP, and HP Protect Tools.
Researched, designed, and coded bulk-mode USB stack to run at BIOS time and to work cooperatively
with BIOS low-speed USB stack.
Invented several technical innovations critical to the success of AuthenTec's secure hybrid matching
system (seven patents filed).
Relied upon to perform troubleshooting for high-pressure, high-profile situations at major customer
sites.
Gained considerable expertise in usage, evaluation, and specification of biometric devices, TPMs, and
Smart Card readers from membership on TCG committees and from integration efforts with TPM and
Smart Card vendors.
Completed initial security architecture for latest AuthenTec fingerprint sensor product, including FW
and PC software domains.
Director of Software Development (August 1999 to July 2004)
Built a team of software developers to support AuthenTec fingerprint sensor hardware. Immediate needs
were for device drivers and APIs to allow third-party software vendors to access fingerprint sensor results.
Recruited, trained, and managed six software engineers and three software test engineers.
Created development and test processes for entire product lifecycle.
JRW Consulting, Inc. (July 1997 to August 1999)
Owner / Consultant
Performed contract work in both embedded and OS based software design and development. Also
provided consulting work in software teambuilding and software lifecycle development process creation and
implementation.
PSC, Inc. (December 1994 to July 1997)
Vice President, Software Development
Responsible for all software engineering activity for PSC. This included management of projects and
personnel at multiple locations, budgeting, resource allocation, and maintenance of procedures for
ISO9001 certification.
Managed and international team of 65 developers and managers to create the FW and SW used in our
market-leading barcode scanning devices and systems.
LazerData Corporation (July 1990 to PSC purchase of LazerData)
Software Engineering Manager (July 1991 to December 1994)
Responsible for scheduling, organization, and oversight of all embedded software engineering activities for
LazerData Corporation. Credited with decisively improving both the quality and productivity of the Software
Engineering Department.
3. JAMES R. WALDRON Page 3
Invented new barcode reconstruction technology that allowed high-speed, multi-orientation scanning of
barcode labels with only two lasers instead of the previous eighteen. Scanners based on this
technology provided 80% of LazerData revenue and resulted in purchase by PSC. This foundational
technology was used by Walmart, JC Penney, UPS, and many airlines to provide high-speed package
sorting throughout the world. This technology enabled the kind of rapid-response distribution center
that was critical to the emergence of large online retailers.
Created and implemented a software development process which qualified for ISO9001. This process
actually improved productivity in the software department. In three years of audits, the software
department received no major or minor deficiencies.
Senior Systems Analyst (July 1990 to July 1991)
Responsible for the analysis, design, and implementation of industrial barcode sortation control systems.
Ported a major software system from a proprietary hardware platform to standard PC/AT platforms.
