Sr. Product Development Engineer – Consumables Division 2010 - present
Paper manufacturing expert for the R&D.Engineering group. Developing new value-added direct
thermal paper and labels products. Joint developer in a patent filed this year for a novel direct
thermal label product. Conducting a six sigma green belt project to increase the speed of the wide
web flexo presses through ink management and control that will result in thousands in cost savings
and increased productivity. Qualify new, safer and environmentally friendly materials for NCR
products including inking and thermal transfer ribbons, labels, and thermal printing papers. Handle
MSDS inquiries and others related to product compliance to environmental regulations such as
Reach, ROHS, etc.
WAUSAU PAPER
Product Development Manager – Printing & Writing Division 2006-2009
Led and participated directly in the development of value-added and premium printing and writing
papers – ideation through commercialization. Developed scrap book papers, end leaf papers, bag
stock, mat board facing, and high end offset and digital printing papers. Handled all inquiries
regarding the environmental compliance of WP products as well as customer questions. Performed
cost analysis of new products and participated in the improvement of the new business inquiry
process decreasing the time to customer order.
INTERNATIONAL PAPER / CHAMPION INTERNATIONAL
Senior Manager–Coating Technology & Research 2000-2006
Directed group members conducting applied coating research on new and emerging materials and
processes and developing new coated paper and board products. Investigated alternative coating
processes and novel product concepts in collaboration with academic researchers, vendors, and
entrepreneurs. Managed the research product portfolio and the product development pipeline for
the Coated & Supercalendered Papers business. Led the group to contribute at least $4MM in
cost savings annually.
Director–Product Development–Applied Technologies 1998-2000
Managed the 21-person coating technology department and grew it to become a 24-member
product development group supporting 3 business platforms with an operating budget exceeding
$3MM. Secured capital and human resources for paper and board finishing, upgrading the coating
pilot plant, and a state-of-the-art non-impact printing test laboratory. Collaborated with business,
marketing, and mill managers in support of product development for the 3 businesses. Drove the
group to contribute to a $40MM+ warranted capital value increase in one year.
Department Leader–Coating Technology 1994-1998
Led a team of professionals and technicians that did coating formulation, and product and process
development for several businesses. Responsible for a $2MM budget and management of the
coating & finishing pilot plant. Negotiated a 3-way joint development agreement with two major
suppliers that resulted in exclusivity on a new raw material used to significantly improve an existing
product and successfully defend the market against lower cost competitive products.
Senior Scientist–Coating Technology 1993-1994
Key contributor to product development for the coated freesheet grade line, coating raw material
substitution for optical and print property enhancement, determining the influence of surface
chemistry on printability, and reduced manufacturing cost.
