14
Types of STF Injuries
16
Did you know?
It doesn’t take much to ‘trip you up’! When
we walk, our toes don’t clear the ground by
much – on average only 14mm (1/2”)
To protect 90% of the population, changes
in elevation for a walking surface should
be <= 6mm (1/4”)
17
Causes of STFs
18
•Ice + Snow
•Water + Liquid
•Getting in/out of vehicle
•Going up/down steps and
stairs
Slips Trips & Falls – Group Activity
19
Consider, Discuss an Action Plan for:
Hazards
Controls
Next Steps
Consider and Discuss STF Hazards:
1. What STF hazards are in your workplace?
2. How are STF hazards identified at your workplace?
3. How are workers, supervisors, managers involved in
hazard identification?
4. How are STF hazards communicated in your
workplace?
20
Consider and Discuss STF Controls:
1. What STF controls are in place now at your
workplace?
2. What is the STF hazard control process for
your workplace?
3. How are workers, supervisors, managers
involved in STF hazard control?
4. How are STF hazard controls communicated
in your workplace?
21
Did you know?
• Good traction helps prevent slips!
• A Coefficient of Friction (COF) of 0.4 –
0.5 or more is needed for excellent
traction!
• Examples:
- Leather shoes on a wet smooth surface
(ceramic tile or ice): COF as low as 0.10
- Shoes with a rubber heel on a brushed
concrete surface: COF >= 1.0
22
STF Action Plan Best Practices
• Hazard identification and control
• Education and training
• Employee engagement
• Communication
• Program evaluation

new or improved measures
for preventing slips, trips
and falls will be put into
action at your
workplace?
How will workers, supervisors and managers

Editor's Notes

  1. The WCB is 100% funded by employers. Many Nova Scotians believe it is govt funded…which in some areas creates a sense of entitlement. Most companies with more than three employees are required to register with the WCB although there are some exceptions. Employers pay the bill – let’s make sure non-work related costs are captured in the right system.
