News
New – Executive Management and Housing Directorate
Beginning June 30, the Executive Management and Housing Directorate will be
closed from noon to 1 p.m. daily. If you have any questions, call 703-696-1152.
New – Upcoming National Park Service historical commemorations
The National Park Service is hosting various Civil War Defenses of Washington
commemorations through July. The Battle of Fort Stevens Reenactment at Fort Ward
will take place July 12-13 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Fort Ward Museum and Historic Site,
4301 West Braddock Road, Alexandria. The free event will include living history
lessons, narrated skirmishes and music. For more information, call 703-746-4848 or visit

The National Park Service will also host a Civil War living history demonstration
and 150th Anniversary commemorative activities at Historic Fort Stevens, 13th and
Georgia Ave., NW, DC, 20011 July 10 from 12:30 to 4 p.m. The free event will include
19th century crafts, music and children’s activities, historic talks and walks as well as

New – SMA to host Twilight Tattoo June 25
Sergeant Major of the Army Ray Chandler will host Twilight Tattoo “Salute to
the Non-Commissioned Officer: Backbone of the Army” June 25. This is “a special
Twilight Tattoo to recognize the service, sacrifice and leadership of Non-Commissioned
Officers from past generations who paved the way for today’s Soldiers,” said Sgt. Maj.
of the Army Ray Chandler. “Our honorees will include Veterans from World War II,
Korea, and Vietnam. Thanks to their service to this country and the sacrifices they and
so many others made to ensure the future of our Nation, today’s Army and its NCO
Corps are recognized as the best in the world.
Twilight Tattoo begins at 7 p.m. with pre-ceremonial music beginning at 6:30
p.m. and will take place on Summerall Field on the Fort Myer portion of Joint Base
Myer-Henderson Hall.
Firecracker 5K Twinkie Challenge July 3
Registration is now open for the next run in the JBM-HH Commanders Race
series – the Firecracker 5K Twinkie Challenge. The race is scheduled for July 3 at the
Fort Myer Officers Club at 6:35 a.m. This race will be a 5K, but will also incorporate an
eating challenge of six Twinkies at the half-way mark.
Awards will be presented to the top male and female finishers (runners will eat
six Twinkies at the 2.5K mark). There will also be prizes for the craziest individual
costume, craziest couples costume and craziest group (three or more) costume.

New Pentagram publication day
Starting July 3, the Pentagram newspaper will publish Thursdays. Accordingly,
all deadlines for content submission have also changed. Further, requests for Pentagram
coverage must be made no later than noon, Mondays, for publication in the following
week's edition. Content such as articles, commentaries and photographs submitted for
consideration of Pentagram publication must be submitted at least two weeks in
advance. News notes submissions must be submitted no later than noon, Wednesday
for consideration of publication in the following week's edition. More details on
submitting news notes can be found on page 5 of the Pentagram.
4.5K Run and 2.5K Walk scheduled for June 27
The Air Operation Group is hosting a 4.5K Run and 2.5K Walk June 27 at 6:35
a.m. on the Fort McNair portion of the joint base. The run/walk begins and ends at
Bldg. 18.
In support of the run/walk, B Street between 4th Avenue and 5th Avenue will be
closed between 4:30 and 8:30 a.m.

JBM-HH Army Ten-Miler Team qualifier series
The second JBM-HH Army Ten-Miler 10K Qualifiers will be Friday, July 18 at
6:35 a.m. at the Fort Myer Fitness Center, Bldg. 414. Registration and participation is
FREE. Registration is available online at www.jbmhhmwr.com or the morning of the
qualifier from 5:30 to 6:15 a.m. at the fitness center.
FMWR has 40 slots for this year’s Army Ten-Miler October 12. To be eligible for
a space on this year’s JBM-HH ATM Team, runners must be Active Duty. If selected as
member of the JBM-HH Team, FMWR pays your entry into the 2014 Army Ten Miler.
The last JBM-HH ATM 10K Qualifier will be Friday, August 1, after which the
team will be formed.

Job Fair slated Aug. 13
A job fair, open to all transitioning military, veterans and military family
members, will be held Aug. 13 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Sheraton Pentagon City
Hotel, 900 South Orme Street, Arlington, Va. 22204.

ACAP Schedule updated for June
The JBM-HH Army Career and Alumni Program has been updated its seminars
and workshops schedule for the month of June. To find out more information about the

Presidential Salute Battery drills being conducted
The 3d U.S. Infantry Regiment (The Old Guard) Presidential Salute Battery will
be conducting crew drills, which includes the firing of blank rounds, every Tuesday
morning from 7-8 a.m. at Arlington National Cemetery. This is a reoccurring event,
which will occur every Tuesday unless mission dictates that it be cancelled. For more

Family Readiness
New – Social media and your job search class available
Henderson Hall offers a “Social Media & Your Job Search” class June 24 from
9:30 to 11 a.m. in Bldg. 29, room 103. This workshop is designed to teach the value of
expanding your network through sites such as LinkedIn, Facebook and Twitter. To

New – Red Cross Babysitting Course available
A Red Cross Babysitting Course will be held on Quantico at the CDC South June
30-July 1 or Aug. 11-12. This two-day course is open to ages 11-16 and is $29. For more

New – ACS Play Morning (Outdoor)
This playgroup is for preschool age children to provide time for play, physical
activity and socialization for parents. Play morning is scheduled for June 25, July 2, 9,
16, 23 and 30 from 10 to 11:30 a.m. We will meet at the playground (Virginia Highlands
Park, 1600 South Hayes Street, Arlington, VA 22202) by the restrooms, weather

New – TransParenting
This 2-part seminar scheduled for July 7 and 14 from 9 to 11 a.m. in the ACS
Bldg. 201 is designed to provide parents who are separated or divorced with the tools to
ensure that they are able to continue supporting and encouraging their children despite
the breakup of the family unit. You must attend both sessions to receive a certificate of

New – Stress Management
Participants will be given information on the basics of identifying stressors in
their life and how to create their own stress management plan. Class is held July 9 from
9 to 11 a.m. in the ACS Classroom, Bldg. 201. Registration required. For questions or to

New – Anger Management
Individuals will receive information on the basic principles of emotions
management, specific information about the impact of unmanaged anger, and receive
resources on how to recognize and manage the anger triggers in their own lives.
Classes are June 25 and July 16 from 9 to 11 a.m. in the JBM-HH ACS Classroom, Bldg.

New – Baby Sign Language
Teach your pre-verbal children to communicate by using sign language. This
class is for parents of infants 6-18 months old. Feel free to bring a brown bag lunch.
Class will be held July 17 from noon to 2 p.m. in the ACS Classroom, Bldg. 201. Pre-

New – Baby Bundles
Prepare your home and relationship for the changes that are needed when your
new baby arrives. A brief overview of the labor and delivery process, newborn care,
and baby proofing your home will be discussed. Individuals will receive a bag of free
baby care and safety items. Class is held July 25 from noon to 2 p.m. in the ACS
Classroom, Bldg. 201. Registration required. For questions or to register call 703-696-

New – Darkness to Light- Stewards of Children
This course teaches adults simple and pro-active steps to help protect children
from sexual abuse. Open to parents, caregivers, and professionals. Class will be held
July 30 from 9 to 11:30 a.m. at the Fort Belvoir ACS, 9800 Belvoir Rd., Bldg. 200.

MCCS Offers New Community Counseling Program
The new Community Counseling Program is designed to provide increased
access to counseling for Marines, sailors, and their families, and to focus on screening,
prevention, and intervention of stressors and problems to improve readiness and
quality of life. We offer individual, couple, family, child, and group counseling services.
All counselors are independently licensed and credentialed professionals who can work
with you to develop a plan and find solutions to meet your needs and help you
overcome stressors in your life. Call 703-614-7204 for an initial screening and to
schedule an appointment.
ACAP supports spouses in transition
Army Career and Alumni Program offers services to the spouses of military
personnel who are transitioning: both retiring or ETSing (Expiration of Term in Service).
Some of the services offered to transitioning spouses include one-on-one assistance
with a resume, a Veterans Affairs benefits briefing, Department of Labor Employment
Workshop (includes the interview process, dress for success, building a resume, salary
negotiation) and financial planning.
More services include classes on home buying, credit scores, investing, TRICARE,
finding and applying for federal jobs and much more.
If your spouse is preparing to transition from the military -- retiring or ETSing, make
an appointment with ACAP.

Anger Management workshops offered
Marine & Family Programs offers anger management workshops weekly,
Wednesdays from 9 to 11 a.m. The workshops are designed to teach eight tools for
managing anger. Participants may start at any time, but must attend all eight sessions to
receive a certificate of completion.
Sessions are in Building 12’s conference room on the Henderson Hall portion of the
joint base. The workshops are open to active duty personnel, their family members, and
military retirees. To register, please call 703-614-7204.
Stress workshops held Tuesdays
Marine & Family Programs offers workshops on coping with work and family stress
on an ongoing basis. The 12-session, evidence-based series, designed to teach strategies
for dealing with stressors, is held Tuesdays, from 2:30 to 4 p.m., in Bldg. 12’s conference
room on the Henderson Hall portion of the joint base. Topics include identifying
stressors, deep breathing and muscle relaxation, assertive communication, changing
yourself talk, eating right, exercise and developing a personal stress management plan.
The workshops are open to active duty personnel, their family members and military
retirees.

Traffic, Roads, Grounds
New – Gate Closure June 27
The Marine Annex Gate on the Henderson Hall portion of the joint base will be
closed effective June 27.
Road construction complete
McNair Road from the intersection of Lee Avenue to Marshall Drive on the Fort
Myer portion of the joint base is now open to all traffic.

New – Upcoming National Park Service historical commemorations The National Park Service is hosting various Civil War Defenses of Washington commemorations through July. The Battle of Fort Stevens Reenactment at Fort Ward will take place July 12-13 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Fort Ward Museum and Historic Site, 4301 West Braddock Road, Alexandria. This is “a special Twilight Tattoo to recognize the service, sacrifice and leadership of Non-Commissioned Officers from past generations who paved the way for today’s Soldiers,” said Sgt. Maj.

Firecracker 5K Twinkie Challenge July 3 Registration is now open for the next run in the JBM-HH Commanders Race series – the Firecracker 5K Twinkie Challenge. The race is scheduled for July 3 at the Fort Myer Officers Club at 6:35 a.m. This race will be a 5K, but will also incorporate an eating challenge of six Twinkies at the half-way mark. Awards will be presented to the top male and female finishers (runners will eat six Twinkies at the 2.5K mark). There will also be prizes for the craziest individual costume, craziest couples costume and craziest group (three or more) costume. Register on www.jbmhhmwr.com. For more information, call 703-696-0594. New Pentagram publication day Starting July 3, the Pentagram newspaper will publish Thursdays. Accordingly, all deadlines for content submission have also changed. Further, requests for Pentagram coverage must be made no later than noon, Mondays, for publication in the following week's edition. Content such as articles, commentaries and photographs submitted for consideration of Pentagram publication must be submitted at least two weeks in advance. News notes submissions must be submitted no later than noon, Wednesday for consideration of publication in the following week's edition. More details on submitting news notes can be found on page 5 of the Pentagram. 4.5K Run and 2.5K Walk scheduled for June 27 The Air Operation Group is hosting a 4.5K Run and 2.5K Walk June 27 at 6:35 a.m. on the Fort McNair portion of the joint base. The run/walk begins and ends at Bldg. 18. In support of the run/walk, B Street between 4th Avenue and 5th Avenue will be closed between 4:30 and 8:30 a.m. For more information, call 703-696-3290. JBM-HH Army Ten-Miler Team qualifier series The second JBM-HH Army Ten-Miler 10K Qualifiers will be Friday, July 18 at 6:35 a.m. at the Fort Myer Fitness Center, Bldg. 414. Registration and participation is FREE. Registration is available online at www.jbmhhmwr.com or the morning of the qualifier from 5:30 to 6:15 a.m. at the fitness center.
  • 3. FMWR has 40 slots for this year’s Army Ten-Miler October 12. To be eligible for a space on this year’s JBM-HH ATM Team, runners must be Active Duty. If selected as member of the JBM-HH Team, FMWR pays your entry into the 2014 Army Ten Miler. The last JBM-HH ATM 10K Qualifier will be Friday, August 1, after which the team will be formed. Presidential Salute Battery drills being conducted The 3d U.S. Infantry Regiment (The Old Guard) Presidential Salute Battery will be conducting crew drills, which includes the firing of blank rounds, every Tuesday morning from 7-8 a.m. at Arlington National Cemetery. New – Red Cross Babysitting Course available A Red Cross Babysitting Course will be held on Quantico at the CDC South June 30-July 1 or Aug. 11-12. New – ACS Play Morning (Outdoor) This playgroup is for preschool age children to provide time for play, physical activity and socialization for parents. New – Anger Management Individuals will receive information on the basic principles of emotions management, specific information about the impact of unmanaged anger, and receive resources on how to recognize and manage the anger triggers in their own lives. New – Baby Sign Language Teach your pre-verbal children to communicate by using sign language. This class is for parents of infants 6-18 months old. Feel free to bring a brown bag lunch. New – Baby Bundles Prepare your home and relationship for the changes that are needed when your new baby arrives. A brief overview of the labor and delivery process, newborn care, and baby proofing your home will be discussed. Individuals will receive a bag of free baby care and safety items. MCCS Offers New Community Counseling Program The new Community Counseling Program is designed to provide increased access to counseling for Marines, sailors, and their families, and to focus on screening, prevention, and intervention of stressors and problems to improve readiness and quality of life. We offer individual, couple, family, child, and group counseling services. All counselors are independently licensed and credentialed professionals who can work with you to develop a plan and find solutions to meet your needs and help you

ACAP supports spouses in transition Army Career and Alumni Program offers services to the spouses of military personnel who are transitioning: both retiring or ETSing (Expiration of Term in Service). Some of the services offered to transitioning spouses include one-on-one assistance with a resume, a Veterans Affairs benefits briefing, Department of Labor Employment Workshop (includes the interview process, dress for success, building a resume, salary negotiation) and financial planning. More services include classes on home buying, credit scores, investing, TRICARE, finding and applying for federal jobs and much more. Anger Management workshops offered Marine & Family Programs offers anger management workshops weekly, Wednesdays from 9 to 11 a.m. The workshops are designed to teach eight tools for managing anger. Participants may start at any time, but must attend all eight sessions to receive a certificate of completion. Sessions are in Building 12’s conference room on the Henderson Hall portion of the joint base. The workshops are open to active duty personnel, their family members, and military retirees. To register, please call 703-614-7204. Stress workshops held Tuesdays Marine & Family Programs offers workshops on coping with work and family stress on an ongoing basis. The 12-session, evidence-based series, designed to teach strategies for dealing with stressors, is held Tuesdays, from 2:30 to 4 p.m., in Bldg. 12’s conference room on the Henderson Hall portion of the joint base. Topics include identifying stressors, deep breathing and muscle relaxation, assertive communication, changing yourself talk, eating right, exercise and developing a personal stress management plan.   • 7. New – Gate Closure June 27 The Marine Annex Gate on the Henderson Hall portion of the joint base will be closed effective June 27. Road construction complete McNair Road from the intersection of Lee Avenue to Marshall Drive on the Fort Myer portion of the joint base is now open to all traffic.
