Most military activities will have curtailed operations Thursday, July 3. The following facilities and places of business have reported open or closed hours for this federal holiday weekend July 3-6. Unless otherwise noted, this list applies to July 4. Independence Day celebrations held on JBM-HH
  3. 3. The Directorate of Family and Morale, Welfare and Recreation will host two events on JBM-HH for the 4th of July celebration. Both events are open to all DoD ID holders and their guests. There will be a barbeque picnic and fireworks viewing overlooking the Washington D.C., skyline at the Fort McNair Officers Club. The gates open at 4 p.m. and food is served between 5 and 7 p.m. Tickets are available for purchase ahead of time with either cash, Visa or Master Card. Tickets purchased the day of the event can ONLY be purchased with cash. For tickets or more information, call the Fort McNair Officers Club at 202-484-5800. A picnic at the pools event will be hosted at the Fort Myer Officers Club from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Food will be served from noon to 5 p.m. Tickets can be purchased in advance or at the event using either cash, Visa or Master Card. Fireworks viewing on JBM-HH Joint Base Myer-Henderson Hall will open portions of the joint base to DoD ID card holders and their guests July 4 to watch the annual fireworks display overlooking Washington D.C. Whipple Field on Fort Myer and the field between D Street and E Street on Fort McNair will open at 5 p.m. Below is a list of approved items guests may have with them: Coolers (all coolers will be searched and no alcohol will be permitted) Strollers Chairs Phones Cameras (in accordance with JBM-HH photo policy) Items prohibited include: Weapons Grills Glass containers Fireworks (to include sparklers) Alcohol Pets Games (football, baseball, Frisbee) Fishing (at Fort McNair) Water and other non-alcoholic drinks will be available for purchase (cash only) at Whipple Field courtesy of DFMWR. Wright Gate will be closed to vehicle traffic at 3 p.m. Pedestrian traffic can access the Fort Myer portion of the joint base until 11 p.m.
  4. 4. Be aware that Arlington County will have road closures around the Fort Myer and Henderson Hall portions of JBM-HH prior to the 4th of July fireworks. News New – Army Substance Abuse Program training in July The Employee Assistance Program will host ASAP training for supervisors, which includes the drug free workplace and prevention of violence in the workplace training July 2 from 1 to 3 p.m. ASAP training for non-supervisors, including drug free workplace and prevention of violence in the workplace training is scheduled for July 8 from 1 to 3 p.m. Suicide prevention for civilians training is scheduled for July 9 from 1 to 3 p.m. If anyone needs special accommodations, call 703-696-3787. New – JBM-HH Library hosts summer reading program Registration has begun for the JBM-HH Library’s summer reading program running through Aug. 3. Upcoming National Park Service historical commemorations The National Park Service is hosting various Civil War Defenses of Washington commemorations through July. The Battle of Fort Stevens Reenactment at Fort Ward will take place July 12-13 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Fort Ward Museum and Historic Site, 4301 West Braddock Road, Alexandria.   5. 5. Firecracker 5K Twinkie Challenge July 3 Registration is now open for the next run in the JBM-HH Commanders Race series – the Firecracker 5K Twinkie Challenge. The race is scheduled for July 3 at the Fort Myer Officers Club at 6:35 a.m. This race will be a 5K, but will also incorporate an eating challenge of six Twinkies at the half-way mark. Awards will be presented to the top male and female finishers (runners will eat six Twinkies at the 2.5K mark). There will also be prizes for the craziest individual costume, craziest couples costume and craziest group (three or more) costume. Register on www.jbmhhmwr.com. Accordingly, all deadlines for content submission have also changed. Further, requests for Pentagram coverage must be made no later than noon, Mondays, for publication in the following week's edition. Content such as articles, commentaries and photographs submitted for consideration of Pentagram publication must be submitted at least two weeks in advance. News notes submissions must be submitted no later than noon, Wednesday for consideration of publication in the following week's edition. Family Readiness Red Cross Babysitting Course available A Red Cross Babysitting Course will be held on Quantico at the CDC South Aug. 11-12. This two-day course is open to ages 11-16 and is $29. ACS Play Morning (Outdoor) This playgroup is for preschool age children to provide time for play, physical activity and socialization for parents. Baby Sign Language Teach your pre-verbal children to communicate by using sign language. This class is for parents of infants 6-18 months old. Feel free to bring a brown bag lunch. Baby Bundles Prepare your home and relationship for the changes that are needed when your new baby arrives. A brief overview of the labor and delivery process, newborn care, and baby proofing your home will be discussed. Individuals will receive a bag of free baby care and safety items. Darkness to Light- Stewards of Children This course teaches adults simple and pro-active steps to help protect children from sexual abuse. Open to parents, caregivers, and professionals. MCCS Offers New Community Counseling Program The new Community Counseling Program is designed to provide increased access to counseling for Marines, sailors, and their families, and to focus on screening, prevention, and intervention of stressors and problems to improve readiness and quality of life. We offer individual, couple, family, child, and group counseling services. All counselors are independently licensed and credentialed professionals who can work with you to develop a plan and find solutions to meet your needs and help you overcome stressors in your life. ACAP supports spouses in transition Army Career and Alumni Program offers services to the spouses of military personnel who are transitioning: both retiring or ETSing (Expiration of Term in Service). Some of the services offered to transitioning spouses include one-on-one assistance with a resume, a Veterans Affairs benefits briefing, Department of Labor Employment Workshop (includes the interview process, dress for success, building a resume, salary negotiation) and financial planning.

Anger Management workshops offered Marine & Family Programs offers anger management workshops weekly, Wednesdays from 9 to 11 a.m. The workshops are designed to teach eight tools for managing anger. Participants may start at any time, but must attend all eight sessions to receive a certificate of completion. Sessions are in Building 12’s conference room on the Henderson Hall portion of the joint base. The workshops are open to active duty personnel, their family members, and military retirees. To register, please call 703-614-7204. Stress workshops held Tuesdays Marine & Family Programs offers workshops on coping with work and family stress on an ongoing basis. The 12-session, evidence-based series, designed to teach strategies for dealing with stressors, is held Tuesdays, from 2:30 to 4 p.m., in Bldg. 12’s conference room on the Henderson Hall portion of the joint base. Topics include identifying stressors, deep breathing and muscle relaxation, assertive communication, changing yourself talk, eating right, exercise and developing a personal stress management plan. Traffic, Roads, Grounds Arlington County Road Closures for the 4th of July The Arlington County Police Department, US Park Police, and VDOT will close multiple roadways on Friday, July 4th, 2014. These closures are designed to facilitate the safe passage of large crowds for the Independence Day events and fireworks. Pershing Drive (detour at N. Barton Street or Washington Blvd.) Columbia Pike between S. Orme Street and S. Joyce St. S. Joyce Street between Army Navy Drive and Columbia Pike Street parking in the areas of the US Marine Corps War Memorial (Iwo Jima), Long Bridge Park, and Air force Memorial will be restricted. Motorists should be on the lookout for temporary “No Parking” signs. Illegally parked vehicles may be ticketed or towed. If your vehicle is towed from a public street, please call 703-558-2222. Arlington County residents and visitors are also reminded of the following: Alcoholic beverages, grills, and fireworks are prohibited on county and federal parkland during Independence Day events. Vendors will not be allowed in the area of the US Marine Corps War Memorial (Iwo Jima). Coolers and backpacks will be subject to search upon entry to the US Marine Corps War Memorial (Iwo Jima) and Long Bridge Park. Attendees are strongly encouraged to use public transportation. The Rosslyn Metro stop on the Orange Line is approximately 5 blocks north of the US Marine Corps War Memorial (Iwo Jima), and the Air Force Memorial is within walking distance of the Pentagon City Metro station. Arlington County will be running shuttle buses to Long Bridge Park from the Crystal City and Pentagon City Metro stations.
