Hiram Maxim invented the machine gun in 1883. The machine gun could fire between 400 to 1600 bullets per minute using a belt or large-capacity magazine. The machine gun was used in several major wars including the Civil War, World War I, and World War II. Hiram Maxim was born in Maine in 1840 and died in London, England in 1916 at the age of 76.

Machine gun
Sir Hiram Maxim invented the machine gun in 1884 which significantly changed warfare tactics. As an engineer, he developed an automatic weapon called the Maxim Gun that uses recoil from firing cartridges to eject empty shells and load new ones. Maxim's gun company was later acquired by Vickers Ltd where he became a director, and the Vickers machine gun went on to be the standard British army issue weapon in World War 1.

The light bulb
Thomas Edison was born in 1847 in Ohio and died in 1931 in New Jersey. He invented the improved incandescent light bulb in 1879 and continued improving its design. Though he did not invent the first light bulb, Edison's model was better and more practical for use in homes. The light bulb made homes safer by providing illumination without the fire risk of candles and oil lamps.
Hairdryer
Alexandre F. Godefoy, who was born in fairyland fairyland, France, invented the hairdryer in 1890. The first model for consumer use was introduced in 1920 and cost $11.50. Early hairdryers were very heavy and difficult to hold. Before hairdryers, women would dry their hair using vacuum cleaner exhaust hoses.
The invention of the crayons
Crayons are made by heating wax and adding color dye before placing the wax in molds to dry. While crayons have been used for art since prehistoric times, the Crayola company began mass producing non-toxic crayons in 1903 when cousins Edwin Binney and Harold Smith created them using charcoal and oil. The brand name "Crayola" was developed by combining the French word for chalk "craie" with "ola" from the word oily.
The slinky
The slinky was invented by accident by Richard James. While working on a boat, James knocked over a spring that walked down a shelf, chair, and stood up on the floor. He told his wife about this and started experimenting with different metals to create the slinky. The first slinky was made from a special metal by a machine, not by hand. After its release, many other slinky-based toys were created like the slinky train, slinky worm, and slinky dog.
Sonar history
Sonar is a system that uses sound waves to track objects underwater like icebergs. Lewis Nixon invented the first sonar to track objects, while Paul Langevin invented the first sonar for submarines. Over the years, sonar technology improved greatly, becoming more advanced and changing in design as it grew more popular for tracking underwater.
Silly putty
James Wright invented silly putty but someone else sells it commercially. Silly putty comes in many colors and was first called "nutty putty." Over 20,000 eggs of silly putty are made each day, with over 300 million eggs produced total since 1950.
The atomic bomb
The atomic bomb was developed during World War II by the United States, Britain, Canada, and Europe to be a powerful new weapon. It was first tested in 1945 and produced massive explosions that could harm people from great distances away. While atomic bombs were nearly used in the 1940s, they are not deployed today, though the technology remains among the most destructive ever created by humanity.
Television
Philo T. Farnsworth invented television in the 1920s and 1930s. He was born in 1906 in Utah and moved to Idaho at age 11, where he began developing ideas for television while still in high school. Farnsworth's first successful television transmission occurred on September 7, 1927, and he received the first patent for television in 1930. He is considered a pioneer in the development of television technology.
The helicopter 2
Igor Sikorsky invented the helicopter in 1939 at age 41 after studying engineering in Paris. The helicopter allowed for easier transport of people and goods to hard to reach places, revolutionizing rescue missions and military operations by air. Over 80 years later, helicopters are still used for the same purposes, transporting cargo, conducting rescues, and serving important functions in modern armed forces.
The mobile phone
The mobile phone was invented in 1973 by Dr. Martin Cooper. It allowed people to make calls from anywhere using a handheld device rather than being tied to a landline. Mobile phones quickly became popular as they enabled communication on the go. Today, mobile phones are used not just for calls but also for texting and accessing the internet from anywhere with battery-powered portable devices.
The Frisbee
The Frisbee is a plastic saucer-shaped disk that was invented by Walter F. Morrison in the 1920s. It is used for both sporting events and recreational play, with skilled players able to catch it between their legs, on a finger, or make it skip, hover, curve or fly straight through skillful throwing techniques.
Typewriter
Christopher Sholes invented the typewriter in the 1800s. When the computer was invented, people started using computers more than typewriters. Over 150 different typewriter models were made, and typewriters are still used today, although computers are more common. Christopher Sholes was born in 1819, died in 1890, and is considered the father of the typewriter. He worked as a printer and newspaper editor before pursuing his interest in inventing.
The Automobile
Henry Ford invented the first affordable automobile in the United States in the late 19th century. He was born in 1863 and invented the Model T, the first affordable car, in 1908. The original price for the Model T was around $825 but Ford was able to bring the price down to $575 within a few years, transforming automobiles from a luxury good to a mainstay of American society. Ford's innovations in assembly line manufacturing allowed for mass production and further reduced the cost of automobiles, making them accessible to the average American family for the first time.
Crayons
In 1903, Benny and Smith Inc. created the first crayon in the United States in Easton, Pennsylvania. However, this early crayon was low quality and not safe for children. Crayons were also independently invented in France by Nicolas Jacques Conte. The first color created was blue and the name "Crayola" comes from the French words for chalk and oily.
Milking machine
The milking machine was invented by Anna Baldwin in 1878 to efficiently milk cows and goats for their milk, as it is still used today and works very well. It had a positive impact on society by providing more milk for people to drink through its ability to milk multiple animals faster than by hand.
Safety Elevator
Elisha Graves Otis invented the first safety elevator in New York City on March 23, 1853. It used a steam-powered rope with toothed guide rails and catches to stop the elevator from falling in the event the rope broke. The safety elevator was first installed and demonstrated at Broadway in New York City.
Light bulb!!!
The light bulb was invented in 1878 by Thomas Edison in Menlo Park, New Jersey. It was the first practical incandescent light that was inexpensive enough for widespread domestic use. Originally light bulbs were yellow, white, or clear in color and looked very different than modern light bulbs. Edison invented the light bulb to provide safe indoor lighting as oil lamps caused many fires. Though Edison had help from others like Davy Swan, he is generally credited as the inventor of the light bulb.
Angel Oak Tree
The Angel Oak tree is located on Johns Island, South Carolina and is estimated to be over 1,500 years old, making it one of the oldest living things east of the Mississippi River. It covers an area of 17,100 square feet and towers over 65 feet tall, providing shade to Johns Island for over 1,400 years. Records show the ownership of the Angel Oak tree and surrounding land dates back to 1717 when Abraham Wright received it as part of a land grant.

A Strategic Approach: GenAI in Education
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.
