Japan Moves South
After Japan took Manchuria in
1931 they slowly began to
work their way South into
China.
By 1933 they had taken the
Great Wall

Japan takes Beijing
1937: Japanese and Chinese
fight outside the gates of the
Capital city of Beijing.
The Japanese win and take
control of China.

Control?
1938: Japan sends 1 million
troops to China. However, due
to the size of China they had to
send another million troops
which still only allowed them to
hold the major cities.

Control?
At 1st some believed that
Japan was there to liberate.
Japan was simply another
dictator.
Killed millions and destroyed
cities.

Moving South
Japanese troops continued to
move south into Indonesia.

British attempt to stop Japan
In an attempt to stop the
Japanese, the British send
naval ships.
Japanese use their planes to
destroy the ships.

Pearl Harbor
December 7th 1941: “A Day
that will live in Infamy”
Japanese do a surprise attack
on the Hawaiian Naval Base.

Why Pearl Harbor?
In order to secure the Pacific
Rim, Japan knew it had to
take out the U.S. which was
the next closest country.

Did FDR know?
The U.S. got word of a
possible attack the night
before.
The U.S. saw the planes on
radar but by that time it was
too late.

The attack took 1 hour and 1
minute.
4 battleships were sunk
188 planes were lost because
the U.S. didn’t expect an air
strike

Casualties
2400 American men died,
many from drowning.
½ of the men were on the
USS Arizona which is
memorialized today.

U.S. enters WWII.
As a result of Pearl Harbor the
United States entered WWII.
