Saint Paul in Art
Images of the Apostle to the Gentiles
Reverend John Arthur Orr, MA, MDiv, PhB
Pastor, Saint Thérèse Catholic Church
Clinton, Tennessee
AD2008
This is a collection of forty-four (44) images of Saint Paul. The images are presented in five (5)
different mediums: paintings (30); sculptures (6); altarpieces/triptychs (4); illuminations (2);
woodcuts (1). The various images are drawn from the works of thirty-seven (37) artists.
Nineteen (19) images depict Saint Paul in glory, one way or another. Twelve (12) images depict
Saint Paul in his ministry. Nine (9) images depict the conversion of Saint Paul. Seven (7) images
depict Saint Paul’s martyrdom.
Thirty-eight (38) times Saint Paul is shown wearing a beard. Twenty-five (25) times Saint Paul is
depicted with a sword, sometimes as persecutor of the Church, before his conversion, otherwise
as symbol of his martyrdom. Anachronistically, Saint Paul is represented with a book twenty-two
(22) times while he is depicted with a scroll only four (4) times. Seventeen (17) times Saint Paul
is depicted with other Saints. Fourteen (14) of the depictions are of Saint Paul in old age while
nine (9) show him as a younger man. While Sacred Scripture is silent on the matter there are six
(6) depictions of a Damascus Road Horse.
Saint Paul is depicted ten (10) times with Saint Peter, eight (8) times with the Lord Jesus, four (4)
times with the Virgin Mary, three (3) times with Barnabas, twice with Saint Francis and once each
with Saint Mark and Saint Leo the Great.
Forty-two (42) passages of Sacred Scripture are depicted, variously:
Regarding Saint Paul writing in his own hand: 1 Corinthians 16:21; Galatains 6:11; Colossians
4:18; 2 Thessalonians 3:17; Philemon 1:19.
Regarding Saint Paul as a letter writer: 1 Corinthians 4:14, 37; 2 Corinthians 1:43; 2:9; 9:1;
13:10; Galatains 1:20; Philippians 3:1; 1 Thessalonians 5:1; 2 Thessalonians 3:17; 1
Timothy 3:14
Regarding Saint Paul’s preaching in Ephesus: Acts 18:18-21; 19:1,26,35; 20:16; 1 Corinthians
15:32; 16:8; Ephesians 1:1; 1 Timothy 1:3; 2 Timothy 1:18; 4:12
Regarding Saint Paul in Lystra: Acts 14:6-7; 16:1-5; 27:1-5; 2 Timothy 3:11
Regarding Saint Paul conversing with Saint Peter: Galatains 1:18; 2:9, 11
Regarding Saint Paul’s Conversion: Acts 9:2-18; 22:6-16
Regarding Saint Paul’s Ecstasy: 2 Corinthians 12:1-4; Colossians 2:5
Regarding Saint Paul Preaching in Athens: Acts 17:15-18:1
Regarding Saint Paul recovering his sight: Acts 9:10-18
Regarding Saint Paul healing the Cripple at Lystra: Acts 14:8-10
Regarding Saint Paul and Barnabas not being Mercury and Jupiter: Acts 14:7-18
Hopefully, this collection will allow those who refer to it to better appreciate Saint Paul during his
Jubilee year and beyond.
