Jan van Riebeeck was born in 1619 in the Netherlands and joined the Dutch East India Company in 1639. In 1651 he volunteered to establish a Dutch settlement at the Cape of Good Hope to serve as a resupply station for ships traveling to the East Indies. He landed in Table Bay in 1652 and built Fort de Goede Hoop, establishing the first permanent European settlement in South Africa. For 10 years as commander, van Riebeeck cultivated gardens, imported livestock and made other innovations that changed the Cape's environment.
