Global Warming EffectsAuthors: Jake Perrine and Josh Starner
What are the effects…?
How are they related? The greenhouse gases trap heat from the sun and Earth in the atmosphere. That leads to drastic changes in the climate by increasing the average temperature. The increase in temperature leads up to the creation of global warming.
Causes of Global WarmingHumans emit extra greenhouse gases that trap in more heat, causing in the average temperature to be warmer.Examples: Driving a car, production in factories, and producing electricity.
ConsequencesIce caps are melting worldwide.Decrease in penguin and polar bear population.Sea levels rising.Animals move up north to reach cooler temperatures.Average precipitation worldwide has increased.Beetles in Alaska chew up trees.Hurricanes and tropical storms are stronger.Floods and droughts are more common.Diseases spread more easily; such as malaria.Less fresh water is available.
Impact of Global Warming on EconomyAgriculture, energy production, and transportation are affected.Every year for the past four years, seven million acres of forest have been burned ($1.3 billion).Sea levels are rising and may cost the Northeast region $2-6.5 billion.
Ways to fight itUse less electricity, heating, and water at home and/or at work.Use other ways of transportation, if possible, that don’t release greenhouse gases.Examples: Walking, biking, jogging, etc.
ArgumentsThe release of greenhouse gases don’t cause global warming.Global climate computers are too crude to predict future climate changes.Modest amounts of global warming are actually beneficial to nature and humans.
Our OpinionsJosh- Global warming is caused more be natural events, rather than human intervention, because the Earth releases more greenhouse gases than humans.Jake- Natural causes are more of the cause than humans because our Earth has been getting warmer for many years, even before humans were created.
