Gilead Sciences implemented the Scout sourcing platform to standardize and accelerate their procurement processes across a growing global organization. Their initial focus was on RFPs but they saw potential for Scout to track other supplier information as well. Key steps included scoping capabilities, standardizing data fields, migrating historical data, developing communication and training plans, conducting a pilot program, and designating support resources. The presentation provided eight tips for other organizations on how to successfully launch and adopt Scout for procurement.

Stream Processing – Concepts and FrameworksGuido Schmutz
More and more data sources today provide a constant stream of data, from IoT devices to Social Media streams. It is one thing to collect these events in the velocity they arrive, without losing any single message. An Event Hub and a data flow engine can help here. It’s another thing to do some (complex) analytics on the data. There is always the option to first store in a data sink of choice and later analyze it. Storing even a high-volume event stream is feasible and not a challenge anymore. But this adds to the end-to-end latency and it takes minutes if not hours to present results. If you need to react fast, you simply can’t afford to first store the data. You need to do process it directly on the data stream. This is called Stream Processing or Stream Analytics. In this talk I will present the important concepts, a Stream Processing solution should support and then dive into some of the most popular frameworks available on the market and how they compare.

We will show how the Chocolatey Agent (Self-Service Installer) with the help of Nexus repos, permit a secure continuous deployment of custom desktop applications on users' workstations and make the use of Citrix XenApp servers almost obsolete. Show how the Package Builder, Synchronizer, Downloader and Internalize simplify the day to day operation of developers.

Reliable Data Intestion in BigData / IoTGuido Schmutz
Many of the Big Data and IoT use cases are based on combing data from multiple data sources and to make them available on a Big Data platform for analysis. The data sources are often very heterogeneous, from simple files, databases to high-volume event streams from sensors (IoT devices). It’s important to retrieve this data in a secure and reliable manner and integrate it with the Big Data platform so that it is available for analysis in real-time (stream processing) as well as in batch (typical big data processing). In past some new tools have emerged, which are especially capable of handling the process of integrating data from outside, often called Data Ingestion. From an outside perspective, they are very similar to a traditional Enterprise Service Bus infrastructures, which in larger organization are often in use to handle message-driven and service-oriented systems. But there are also important differences, they are typically easier to scale in a horizontal fashion, offer a more distributed setup, are capable of handling high-volumes of data/messages, provide a very detailed monitoring on message level and integrate very well with the Hadoop ecosystem. This session will present and compare Apache Flume, Apache NiFi, StreamSets and the Kafka Ecosystem and show how they handle the data ingestion in a Big Data solution architecture.
Apache Kafka as Event Streaming Platform for Microservice ArchitecturesKai Wähner
This session introduces Apache Kafka, an event-driven open source streaming platform. Apache Kafka goes far beyond scalable, high volume messaging. In addition, you can leverage Kafka Connect for integration and the Kafka Streams API for building lightweight stream processing microservices in autonomous teams. The Confluent Platform adds further components such as a Schema Registry, REST Proxy, KSQL, Clients for different programming languages and Connectors for different technologies.
The session discusses how tech giants like LinkedIn, Ebay or Airbnb leverage Apache Kafka as event streaming platform to solve various different business problems and how to create a scalable, flexible microservice architecture. A live demo shows how you can easily process and analyze streams of events using Apache Kafka and KSQL.
In this Meetup Yaar Reuveni – Team Leader & Nir Hedvat – Software Engineer from Liveperson Data Platform R&D team, will talk about the journey we made from early days of the data platform in production with high friction and low awareness to issues into a mature, measurable data platform that is visible and trustworthy.
Software Engineering as the Next Level Up from Programming (Oracle Groundbrea...Lucas Jellema
Software engineering is programming with the added dimension of time: programs that can evolve and scale, be maintained and be operated by multiple people over a longer period of time. What does it take to do software engineering in a professional manner - beyond mere programming? As programmers, our main goal is to make IT work. To translate functional specification into executable code. And sure, that is the least we can do. But we have more responsibility than this. We have to produce software that is robust and will reliably handle expected and unexpected cases. Software that is scalable and can handle expected and somewhat unexpected load gracefully. With minimal operating costs and in the greenest way possible. Software that is observable and manageable and that can be evolved with changing and new functional requirements and with changing technology. Software that will be legacy in the original, positive meaning of the word. That does not depend on the one big brain in our team or on the guy that has been around for three decades. Software that we know is good and can comfortably be modified in a controlled and productive way. We have to grow from excellent programmers to professional software engineers. This session talks about what it takes to create our code with honor. It discusses automation at every level in the build, rollout and monitoring of infrastructure (as code), platform and application, using CI/CD pipelines and DevOps procedures and tools. The session talks about testing – before and during development as well as after each change anywhere in the system and for both functional and non-functional aspects. Test driven development, regression testing and smoke testing are among the concepts discussed. The term ‘clean code’ refers to code that is readable, testable and maintainable. Through code analysis and peer reviews and by performing refactoring we constantly refine our software to be collectively adaptable. The session demonstrates the concepts discussed with code samples in the context of cloud native programming. As software engineers, we have an obligation to society, to our peers and to ourselves to not only write software that does the job, but to create code that is good. Ours is a great and meaningful line of work, especially if we raise our game professionally to code with honor.

First Steps with Globus Compute Multi-User EndpointsGlobus
In this presentation we will share our experiences around getting started with the Globus Compute multi-user endpoint. Working with the Pharmacology group at the University of Auckland, we have previously written an application using Globus Compute that can offload computationally expensive steps in the researcher's workflows, which they wish to manage from their familiar Windows environments, onto the NeSI (New Zealand eScience Infrastructure) cluster. Some of the challenges we have encountered were that each researcher had to set up and manage their own single-user globus compute endpoint and that the workloads had varying resource requirements (CPUs, memory and wall time) between different runs. We hope that the multi-user endpoint will help to address these challenges and share an update on our progress here.

Providing Globus Services to Users of JASMIN for Environmental Data AnalysisGlobus
JASMIN is the UK’s high-performance data analysis platform for environmental science, operated by STFC on behalf of the UK Natural Environment Research Council (NERC). In addition to its role in hosting the CEDA Archive (NERC’s long-term repository for climate, atmospheric science & Earth observation data in the UK), JASMIN provides a collaborative platform to a community of around 2,000 scientists in the UK and beyond, providing nearly 400 environmental science projects with working space, compute resources and tools to facilitate their work. High-performance data transfer into and out of JASMIN has always been a key feature, with many scientists bringing model outputs from supercomputers elsewhere in the UK, to analyse against observational or other model data in the CEDA Archive. A growing number of JASMIN users are now realising the benefits of using the Globus service to provide reliable and efficient data movement and other tasks in this and other contexts. Further use cases involve long-distance (intercontinental) transfers to and from JASMIN, and collecting results from a mobile atmospheric radar system, pushing data to JASMIN via a lightweight Globus deployment. We provide details of how Globus fits into our current infrastructure, our experience of the recent migration to GCSv5.4, and of our interest in developing use of the wider ecosystem of Globus services for the benefit of our user community.
Large Language Models and the End of ProgrammingMatt Welsh

4. Importance of CAR T Therapy
• Breakthrough in hematologic cancer treatment in which a
patient’s own T cells are engineered to seek and attack cancer
cells
• Involves removing a patient’s immune cells, modifying those
cells, then infusing them back in the patient to fight cancer
• Each treatment is manufactured specifically for an individual
patient
• Yescarta® establishes Gilead’s leadership in this new cell
therapy – now approved for adult patients with relapsed or
refractory large B-cell lymphoma after two or more lines of
systemic therapy
• Research into other B-cell malignancies, earlier lines of therapy
and solid tumors are planned/ongoing

Benchmark: Shared Information
Today, we will be sharing takeaway tips for
your Procurement team
In addition, we thought it might be
interesting for us all to take a survey and
share the results as a Benchmark for
Procurement.
The survey will be collected at the end of
the presentation and the results will be
sent for all to share with their companies.

Constructive Disruption Through Standardization
As with any rapidly growing company, Gilead Sciences Procurement function
has been challenged to meet growing demand. Scout was initially selected as a
tool to standardize and accelerate our RFPs.
Ultimately, we saw that Scout could go far beyond RFPs. Our initial challenge
was to successfully launch Scout across 35+ Sourcing resources with:
• multiple spend category leaders
• varied procurement practices
• different business line needs
• distinct geographic coverage areas
Beyond launching a tool, Scout’s roll out became an opportunity to standardize
and raise the bar for how the entire Procurement function performed.

Agenda
Today, we will share 8 takeaway tips from our journey with Scout.
1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8
wherever you are in your Scout journey, we hope our practical tips are helpful
10. #scoutspark
Scope
Once our team understood the flexibility of Scout, a key step was to lock down
on our scope. We agreed to initially focus on three capabilities.
scoping discussion allowed the category owners to share differences in how they operate
Takeaway Tip #1
Scout offer flexible options for
logging one time and recurring
cost savings. Make sure that
you spend time as a team
standardizing before entering
savings.
1
11. #scoutspark
Process
Scout allows you to add your own customer fields. Grouping the fields within
logical sections made data entry easier for our team members.
resolving field definitions is an opportunity to standardize across categories for reporting
Takeaway Tip #2
Develop a master list of fields
to resolve differences and
clarify how people have
historically used information. A
good place to start is ‘project
roles’.
2
12. #scoutspark
Data Migration
Once started with Scout for RFPs, it is easy to see that benefit can be gained in
tracking other supplier related information.
Scout is an excellent data capture tool, be sure to cleanse historical data prior to launch
Takeaway Tip #3
Work with Scout support to
validate data migration
approach and roadmap. They
can save your team time and
provide awareness of future
releases which impact data.
Data to Prioritize for Launch
• Procurement team and emails (for invites)
• Supplier Names and emails
• Historical Sourcing Projects
• Historical Sourcing Savings
Future Considerations for Planning
• Supplier Attributes (e.g., Preferred)
• Supplier Documents (e.g., Code of Conduct)
• Supplier Contracts

13. #scoutspark
Communication
Elevating the Procurement function with Scout is exciting. That said, prepare
your audiences with advanced communications to manage expectations.
let the business know that suppliers will be receiving a Scout invite in advance of RFP
Takeaway Tip #4
Leverage Scout provided
guides – customize for your
company to deliver ‘getting
started guides’ for the business
and suppliers.
4
14. #scoutspark
Reporting
Reporting can be as simple as ‘export all to a spreadsheet’ or as advanced as
connections to Tableau for executive views.
the administrator can setup a group of ‘shared’ starter reports to get started
Takeaway Tip #5
Beginner: Develop a shared
‘starter’ report library for your
team.
Advanced: add custom fields
for combining supplier spend
data with Scout activity.
5
15. #scoutspark
Training Plan
In person training is a great way to allow your team to gain confidence.
Include full event lifecycle (e.g., business scoring) and supplier experience.
if training format allows, provide both RFP owner and supplier view at the same time
Takeaway Tip #6
Perform a ‘mock event’ so that
Procurement knows what
Scout looks like to the
business and suppliers.
6
Training Materials Check List
• Supplier Facing Guide
• Business Facing Guide
• Procurement Guide
Training Readiness Check List
• Accounts setup for mock event
• Template email to Supplier
• Template email to Business
• Template RFP / Scoring
• Shared reports setup
16. #scoutspark
Pilot Feedback
Pilot Feedback is a great way to capture unknowns and generate positive
momentum in advance of launch. Include pilot group in early training classes.
hosting training with a Pilot group is recommended if you support more than five people
Takeaway Tip #7
Develop a Scout ‘user group’
within the Procurement team
and the business to advocate
for the use of Scout.
7
17. #scoutspark
Support
Decide in advance of launch who you would like supplier, business and
Procurement team member questions.
having an email address for all Scout questions ensures Procurement manages service
Takeaway Tip #8
After launch, focus on
development of template
supports for advanced RFP
scoring.
For admins – publish a project
data gap report to keep
pipeline reporting clean

~2.6 million patients treated with Gilead Hepatitis C medicines … with a cure rate > 95%
BRIAN
It’s been very rewarding for us to be at the center of transforming an HIV diagnosis from a death sentence to a manageable chronic disease. The development of STRs has played a pivotal role.
If you were a patient diagnosed with HIV in 1996, the handful of about 30 pills on your left is what your regimen would look like to control the virus. This often came with debilitating side effects.
On the right is what we call a single tablet regimen – one pill with 3 or more medications combined in one dose. This is taken once a day. We introduced Atripla in 2006, Complera in 2011, Stribild in 2012, Genvoya in 2015, Odefsey in 2016 and Biktarvy in 2018.
11.5 million patients with HIV in more than 130 low and middle income countries are receiving generic or branded Gilead medicines through our access program
