Main activities implemented in the country
under Pillar 1
1. Implement, monitor and document appropriate sustainable
soil management (SSM) practices
Under the National Corn Program, 20-hectare pilot model
farms were established in 6 sites nationwide to showcase
appropriate SSM and empower local government units (LGUs)
to integrate SSM into their local programs. Expansion of
additional 20 hectares will be established annually until 2022.

2. Development of infographics to promote SSM
During the period of COVID 19 Pandemic, when face-to-face
awareness raising was prohibited, infographics that
highlighted some SSM practices were posted on the BSWM
webpage. This is also in support to the observance of the
2020 Desertification and Drought Day and 2020 Soil
Conservation Month to promote SSM

3. Development of the Philippine National Soil
Conservation Roadmap
The development of the Philippine National Soil
Conservation Roadmap is underway. It provides a 10-
year outlook and direction on strategic actions that will
be pursued to avoid soil degradation, reduce and
mitigate on-going degradation, and undertake
restoration of degraded land and soils.

1. Awareness raising - Live streaming held December 4,
2020 - Technical session aired with 1,500 viewers onsite
and remote via Facebook page of the Department of
Agriculture - Philippines

b) Revised World Soil Charter and Challenges in the
Philippines (SWRRD)
c) Voluntary Guidelines for Sustainable Soil Management
(SWRRD)

What did your country do on the World Soil Day?
World Soil Day (WSD) 2020 – December 4, 2020 @ Bureau of Soils &
Water Management, Quezon City
Week-long celebration together with the three National Soil & Water
Resources Research Centers at Bulacan, Rizal and Bukidnon
Conduct of photo essay contest, and poetry writing contest (from
December 1-3, 2020) which encouraged participation of the youth
from Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao.
WSD banners exhibit along the Elliptical Circle, LRT and MRT stations,
DA Regional Field Offices, Bureaus and other National Government
Agencies
Live streaming of culminating activity awareness raising to 427 on-site
participants and about 2500 viewers nationwide with some Asian
viewers

Four sets of National Map Generated
1. EC maps for 0-30 cm and 30-100cm soil depth
2. pH maps for 0-30cm and 30-100cm soil depth

4. Salt affected Soils – for 0-30 and 30-100 soil depth
Likewise, we have prepared and harmonized
soil information to WRB classification and in conformity
with the Soil Atlas of Asia

One of the bigger accomplishments for this Pilar is the
implementation of the National Soil Health Assessment
Project Nationwide. The National Soil Sampling and Testing
Project (for rice and corn growing areas) which is at its
wrap-up stage this year has the following output:
1. Maps in digital format such as elemental N, P, K, pH, and
fertilizer guide.
2. Matrices of fertilizer recommendation by municipalities
(hand book)
