  2. 2. Activities implemented from June 2017 to June 2018 - The governance of the partnership was updated : ‫؟‬ ‫؟‬ ‫؟‬ ‫؟‬ • Countries still missing a national focal point: Kuwait, Libya, Qatar and United Arab Emirates
  3. 3. Activities implemented from June 2017 to June 2018 - Working groups for the five GSP Pillars of Action were formed. Activities implemented from June 2017 to June 2018 The fourth NENA workshop will take place on 13 June 2018 to: Review and confirm the governance of the partnership Finalize the working groups for the 5 Pillars of the GSP Review the NENA regional implementation plan; and Agree on the activities for immediate execution in 2018-2020. Activities implemented from June 2017 to June 2018 Pillar 1: Promote sustainable management of soil resources and improved global governance for soil protection and sustainable productivity. - national initiatives to implement the VGSSM were taken; - Countries submitted inputs on the activities undertaken to implement the principles in the revised World Soil Charter (completion of the related online survey http://fao.msgfocus.com/c/1cfJEi4VLgcgMeBnvGM5tqcc).

Pillar 2: Encourage investment, technical cooperation, policy, education, awareness and extension in soils - The region was active in celebrating World Soil Day, therefore raising awareness on the importance of soil resources. - The Soil Doctors programme was presented to NENA countries, which are now assessing the possibility to implement it at the national level.

Pillar 3: Promote targeted soil research and development focusing on identified gaps, priorities and synergies among economic/productive, environmental and social dimensions. - the first meeting of the Editorial Board of the Soil Atlas for Asia, which also involves countries in the Near East, was organized in March 2018. Activities implemented from June 2017 to June 2018

Pillar 4: Enhance the quality and availability of soil data and information: collection, analysis, validation, reporting, monitoring, integration with other disciplines. - countries were supported in developing their national Soil Organic Carbon (SOC) map, which was included in the Global Soil Organic Carbon (GSOC) map. - Training on digital soil organic carbon mapping took place at:- Iran January 2018June 2017 Netherlands International soil reference and wageningen (ISRIC) June 2017

Pillar 5: Harmonization of methods, measurements and indicators for the sustainable management and protection of soil resources. - national reference laboratories were identified to participate in the Global Soil Laboratory Network (GLOSOLAN) and to form the Regional Soil Laboratory Network (RESOLAN) for the NENA region to be launched by the end of 2018
