Italica was the first Roman city founded in Hispania (modern Spain) in 206-205 BC. It reached its peak in the 1st and 2nd centuries AD under the emperors Trajan and Hadrian, both of whom were born in Italica. They greatly expanded the city's economy and built many public structures, including a large amphitheater that could seat 25,000 people, making it one of the largest in the Roman world. The archaeological remains at Italica provide insight into its urban layout and architecture during the Roman period.
