Viriato was a shepherd in Portugal who became a leader fighting against Roman domination around 150 BC. He managed to defeat a Roman praetor and continued fighting on the plateau at Segóbriga. However, the Roman consul Fabius Maximus defeated Viriato in 145 BC, forcing him to retreat to Lusitania. When Roman troops left for the war in Numantia, Viriato resumed attacks, defeating another praetor. A peace treaty was concluded around 141 BC but not respected.
