The 56th Junior High School of Athens was founded in 1979 as the Mixed High School of Ampelokipi and was later renamed in 1983. It first operated in a rented building before moving to its current location in 1980. The school uses buildings from the 1930s designed by the architect Angelos Siagas. It initially had morning and afternoon shifts but now only operates in the morning. The Ambelokipoi district where the school is located saw rapid population growth after World War II and is now a dense residential and business area of Athens served by public transportation.

3. The history of our school -1
 Our school was founded in 1979 as the Mixed High
School of Ampelokipi. In 1983 it was renamed as the
56th Junior High School of Athens.
 In the first year, it operated in a rented building, in an
apartment building at Fokidos street in Ampelokipi -
together with other School Units. In 1980 it was
transferred to Achaias Street, where a new building
had been erected to which the students of Primary
Education had already been transferred.

 The High School used the halls of the old building
that had been emptied. The old building of the school
complex was built during the governance of George
Papandreou, in the period 1930-1934, according to the
plans of the well-known modernist architect Angelos
Siagas.

 Initially, the schedule was morning and afternoon
shift. In the morning, the 1st Gymnasium students
were taught, and in the afternoon the 2nd and 3rd
Gymnasium students were taught.
 Then, with the creation of a new building in the area,
the working hours were morning-afternoon. Our
school, with the reduction of the number of students
in education, Primary and Secondary, is now only in
the morning shift

6. The history of Ambelokipoi -1
 Ambelokipoi is one of the most densely populated areas of
Athens.
 It is a district of the Municipality of Athens and is located
in the northwestern part of the Municipality. We could
conceive the boundaries of the district from well-known
buildings: the Hippocratio Hospital, the People's and
Children's Hospitals, the Red Cross Hospital, the "Apollon"
skyscraper, the Panathinaikos stadium (of the "Alexandras
Avenue"), the Elena maternity hospital and the American
embassy.
 No wonder the district is defined by so many hospitals:
because it had a very healthy climate, before the war it was
almost exclusively a hospital area.

7. The history of Ambelokipoi -2
 After World War II it showed rapid population growth.
 It is probably the most convenient residential area of
Athens, as it is served by metro, buses and trolleybuses
and, due to the transport infrastructure, it has
developed into an economic and business center. The
region is home to large companies, embassies of
foreign countries, organizations, etc.

8. The history of Ambelokipoi -3
 The etymology of Ambelokipoi is doubtful: most likely
the name has come from the names "vines" and
"gardens" because it is established that there were
vineyards in the area. However, some claim that it
comes from the word "alopecia", the name of the
ancient municipality that existed in the area or from
the corruption of the word Angelokipoi.
